I recently had to replace my R220. (I do alot of CD/DVD Printing, and they die about every year)
I always use a generic ink. G&G Ink (been using then for almost 4 years) and never have had a problem. I have used them in R200, R220, R300 and RX580. They work great.
I just got my R260 a week ago, and ran through the orginial ink that came with it. When I tried to replace it with the generic T0781 (black) it will NOT take it. I have tried all 6. I have to use real epson ink in the printer.
I also have the RX580, this takes the same ink as the R260. The RX580 takes the generic ink and works great.
Has anyone else had, or heard of this problem with the R260??
I just don't get it, if the RX580 takes the ink, shouldn't the R260 since they are the same cartridge?
Thanks for your help.

the manufacture date does matter.
According to Epson, now they are changing codes over time to keep people from using CIS, non-OEM cart or refill cart. -

A little bit of fiddling about with those ink tubes , but once there running fine , its a perfect system .
Mines the r230 , the same chip issue to prevent non-oem carts , and its been a good setup .
Should it accidentally run out of ink , I have to use the original carts to reset the printer , and away it gose again .
Yes , its a cis , but its fitted with genuine epsom oem carts , which provides virtually no issues ever . -
InkRepublic has cheaper but better product

The ink is even better than OEM's.
And it's FREE shipping all over the world.

Does anybody have a source for a set of the auto reset chips for a printer built in April'07
or a chip reseter for the OEM cartridges? -

You dont say model , so you have to look see for your self . -
I am currently using the non-OEm ink from Rima.com (G&G brand) on my r260 and it works great @ about $25 a set. You can get it at Supermediastore.com, too, but it costs a bit more, there.

Yes its a well known problem which ink suppliers should point out, The R260 / R265 / R360 / RX560 as well as other models manufactured after March 2007 don't accept the compatibles, whether the combat this in the near future i can't comment on, either buy original ink or try and get one manufactured before march 07 is my advice.
--------Info Taken From Ink Supplier With Regards To Above Printers--------
(If you have previously used compatible inks in your printer, without problem, then you can ignore this)
Important Notice
Before purchasing compatible ink cartridges for your Epson printer, please read the following:
Not all Epson printers are the same, so not all Epson R260 / R265 / R360 / R380 / RX560 / RX580 printers will accept compatible ink cartridges. This is not isolated to our brands of inks, but to compatible inks in general.
How will I know if my printer will accept the compatible T801 – T806 inks?
This all depends on when your printer was manufactured by Epson.
If your printer was manufactured before 01 March 2007, then our current compatible inks will work.
If your printer was manufactured after 01 April 2007, then the current compatible ink cartridges will not work with your printer.
If your printer was manufactured during March 2007, then the current compatible ink cartridges may or may not work, it all depends if you have the newer version of printer in which case we'd recommend you only order 1 cartridge to try. The compatibles only work with the earlier, older version. -
PS: Nobody has yet to tell me by box packaging or on the printer how to tell when the printer was built other than by trial and error... But my guess is.. my the model number plate on the printer itself??
Mine reads: MODEL B411B
So to help track down which R260 printers need the newer chip how about posting the model number and when you purchased yours.... unless you know how to tell my serial number when a printer was built. -
i just bought an RX580 from Best Buy as it was on sale for $99.99, good thing i still have an almost new R340 that takes the old ink.
how the heck can you tell when it was made?? -
So far, I now have 2 Epson Stylus Photo Color R260 printers. Bought the first and quickly ran out of ink. Popped in a set of generic cartridges - wouldn't work - said they weren't genuine Epson and unlike the older R220 gave no option to go ahead and use them any way. ( I should mention both R260's were factory rehabs purchase early part of June so there was some hope they were built before Mar/April 2007 when Epson began to 'change the chip code' game - no such luck - although they could have re-written the firmware in them to update to the newer released units so generics wouldn't work. A rehab cost $59 including shipping and comes with a full set of cartridges. An order for cartridges alone is $80.84, so it's cheaper to buy another R260 just for the cartridges and set aside the old R260 as a spare.
Several sites in England are warning their customers of the chip code change problem, but their
series of printers are call R265 and the cartridges are T801 - 6, where as USA model is the R260 and uses cartridges TO781 - 6. Does anyone know if cartridges are interchangeable? Printers look identical. Reason for asking, one supplier is advertising second generation generics that will work in the newer machines - don't know if they sell to USA or if they are compatible.
If anyone sees any cartridges being specifically advertised to work in later model R260's, or
Firmware that can be downloaded to allow the newer models to accept older cartridges, would
appreciate the info.
The R260 is a great printer - perhaps the best out for photo printing as it's nozzle diameter is
1/10th that of a human hair - but price of ink sucks - and it really sucks up ink!!
A bit off topic, but I discovered the Epson R220 (the model I replaced with the R260 when it stopped printing to CD/DVD - prints to paper OK) has been discontinued and is for sale at the
Epson store for $69.95 post paid while supplies last [ordered one received it, slapped in generics rather than the supplied genuine Epson cartridges and it works great on generics] -
From feedback it seems that the change in the cartridge reading of the generic cartridges caught the generic companies off guard.. but they should start shipping a 3rd generation of chips for the T078xxx/T077xxx this week so check with your local supplier of generic printing supplies.. and press the point that you have a new printer.. as it seems that some of the generic companies still don't know of the change in the chips and will try to sell you older product with no refund policy.

Emailed an English firm advertising 2nd generation generic cartridges for R265. Asked if they
would work in R260 and if they shipped to US. They replied they didn't ship to US so the question
of compatibility was mote.
Makes you wonder though, As far as I can tell, Genuine Epson cartridges must work in the R260,
regardless when the cartridges were manufactured, otherwise Epson would be faced with same problem as the generic manufactures.
Would be nice if someone could figure out a way to extract the firmware in the older R260's so
it would be possible to overwrite the new code and make it possible to use the old generics, or better yet modify the firmware so the printer doesn't care what cartridges you install.
Another thought, as some may know, Epson is suing several generic manufacturers and dealers
citing copy right infringement concerning the PC chip. Doesn't appear that the manufacturers
are making direct copies, or the chip would work in newer printers. Wonder how that will weigh
with the courts? -
There is a USA importer now listing on eBay a new "9-Pin" chip resetter so that OEM cartridges can be refilled and I know of one USA importer that now has reversion #3 of the ARC chips for the CIS / Spongless Cartridges and I am expecting a set of the ARC chips from eBay seller "InkJetCarts"
-
Perhaps now that some dealers have the chip resetter and CIS systems available for the new
model Epsons, the generic cartridges makers won't be far behind with a new generation of cartridges. I'll save my old genuine Epson cartridges, but hope I won't have to go the refill route.
Used to refill the older Epson cartridges, but it becomes a real pain, and don't think I want to
spend the money for a CIS system - had a couple of Epson printers die on me.
Since I got the R220 from Epson store that they are selling off as discontinued line, I'll use my
R260 sparingly until generics are available ( the R220 works great with generics and appears to
use far less ink than the R260 ). I imagine the reason the R260 uses up ink so quickly is the
much finer detail it prints. -

Has anyone tried the Epson ink cartridges being sold on e-bay for the R260? I am refering to the ones advertised as genuine Epson cartridges and appear to be packaged like the ones
that ship with the printer ie two plastic wrapped packages of three of the colors in each
package. They generally go for about $40 when you include the shipping cost.
That's a lot better than the $80 I paid Epson for a set and their price appeared to beat
any third party seller of original cartridges. -

I found these sites with apparently great deals: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330150123235 and http://meritline.com/epson-stylus-r260-printer-inkjet-cartridges.html. Will these work with this printer? Will I need to purchase the 9 pin chip resetter?
Thank You. -

If you plan on refilling the OEM cartridges you will need a chip reseter
And a better buy on the ink would be from: InkJetCats

Well it looks like the generic cartridges for the later model Epson R260 have finally started to make their appearance - that is if I read the info on the following site:

Check it out. -

Received the ink cartridges for the Epson R260 from ABC ink, installed them and the only problem
I ran into was the magenta wasn't printing. after wasting 1/4 tank of ink, I finally opened the
cartridge cage and discovered I forgot to remove the yellow tape from that cartridge. Another
two cleaning runs and everything worked fine. What surprised me was they are reporting
to be genuine Epson cartridges!
I normally buy my cartridges from Supermedia, but when I e-mailed them asking if they were
selling the new cartridges that worked in printers manufactured after April 1, 2007, they replied I would have to call their technical department. If they can't answer a simple yes or no question
I'll buy from ABC ink from now on. ( I had to send back my last order from Supermedia as they were the old cartridges - got my money back promptly, but out the return postage fee). -
Ordered generic cartridges for my Epson R220 from Ink and Beyond as they were having a special 35% off [ site shows offered expired July 31, however as I am on their e-mail list they they sent an e-mail extending the offer until August 31] two sets [12 carts] was just under $20 so in order not to pay the $2.99 shipping for orders under $20, I ordered a black TO78 for my R260 to see if they were carrying the updated cartridges for R260's built after April 2007. Received the package and tried out the black cartridge in my R260 and it reports it is a genuine Epson and nozzle check was perfect. [discount code is juhsa].

I have refillable carts in which the auto reset chips quit working. I kept my original epson carts and carefully removed the chips from the oem and put them on my refillables. I now use an epson chip resetter and it works pretty darn well. This may be an option for some of you
-
Generic cartridges that we were using quit working after I temporarily used some Epson-brand carts. We were saving the "good stuff" for special projects, so we took out the generics, put in the new Epsons, and put the generics (which still had plenty of ink in them) back in when we were done. Only then did the printer flag them as incompatible. It seems like the chips on the Epson carts actually updated the printer, but I find that difficult to believe. Any ideas why this would happen? Thanks.

I'm thinking in buying this printer at $75.00 in Sam's club, I would like to start using the printer with a generic ink system or cartridges but I heard generic ink can clog up the heads, if this true? and if its not true then whats the best CIS or Refillables i can get? thanks
