I know I gain nothing to re-encode from XviD to DivX, right? Should I encode from XviD to DVD?

Once upon a time it was to play them back on your TV. It was only a couple of years ago that very few if any DVD players could playback Divx/Xvid files, and standalone media players were even rarer. Now it is not so much of an issue for most people.

However, if you need subtitle support and your player doesn't handle external subs (e.g. the PS3), if you want good menu facilities etc, then you may still want to use the DVD format.
