  1. Hello all. I'm not really a newbie to video editing or capturing, it's just been a while since I've done it. I've set up my SVHS VCR with a S-VIDEO cable to my computer, and am trying to capture at 720x480, and am getting a noticable loss in picture quality. The picture is much fuzzier than it is on my TV. It also has some weird horizontal lines in it. I just found out that capturing at 720x480 is really unneccessary because SVHS doesn't have this resolution in the first place. Could this be the problem? Or could it be that my monitor just doesn't display the picture as well cause it's higher quality? When I play it back onto a DVD (after I get my burner, is it possible that it will show up properly? UGH, thanks for the help!

I have heard that the computer monitor does make VCR video looked degraded. Since you do not have your DVD burner yet, if your DVD player can CD-R(W)s, why not try to make one, play it on your DVD and see if the video is acceptable on your TV?

  3. My normal DVD player is a Sony Playstation 2. I know that it can't play VCD's, but I know that it can read CD-R's. Are you saying that I could record a movie in DVD format onto a CDR and it should be able to read it? I thought that it had to be a DVD for the player to read it as a movie. I didn't think that just the format could be read as a movie on a regular CD. Am I making sense?

I am saying if you are willing to sacrifice a little quality, why not make VCD or a SVCD? If your player can play CD-Rs, maybe it can play these.

  5. 1. 720x480 is indeed overkill. Well, since you're setting things up for DVD, can't really blame you ....

    2. Post-processing. Have you analyzed your capture? Have you figured out what those weird lines are? How do you correct them? Or you may need a better capture card.

  6. I'm pretty sure PS2's won't play a DVD format file burnt onto a CD (wouldn't that just be a SVCD more-or-less?) as they won't play VCD's (or SVCD's as far as I know).

I wonder if that's because SONY didn't want to pay PHILIPS the cash for the licence for VCD?

Going by what the owners say in the database, along with the post dated 27 Aug, apparently, the PS2 does play CD-Rs, is the (S)VCD disk a type of CD-R? Hmmm....
    Hello.
