  1. Hi folks,

    I have a wierd problem ...

I downloaded an SRT Subtitle for a movie ... unfortunately all I could find was a Portuguese & Hungarian Subtitles for this Asian Kung Fu movie ... so, I converted the SRT subtitle to english using online translators ... and then I edited the .SRT as a text file to correct -> to --> (found the solution in another post) so it can be viewed correctly ... so far so good ... I could now play it back with VLC on my laptop just fine ... I then decided to run the SRT thru "Subtitle Workshop" to check to see if there are any Errors ... so I corrected all the Errors per SW suggestion ... I even corrected some of the Language ... but when I wanted to play it back on my Philips DVD Player (Philips 5980) which is DivX capable and it can play SRT, IDX subtitles just fine ... it DID NOT even show me the subtitle ... I keep pushing the Subtitle button on my Philips DVD Player and nothing ...

BTW, I name both the AVI and SRT the same (e.g. KungFu.War.1968.avi + KungFu.War.1968.SRT) but I do NOT put them in their own Separate folder ... I wonder if this matters ... it has NOT so far with other movies ... so I doubt if that is my problem.

I have searched the Web and this Site and have not found an answer ...

Q1: Why this SRT file can NOT be seen on my Philips 5980? How can I fix it?

Q2: I noticed in some threads that they refer to "Corrupted" SRT ... so HOW can I tell if my SRT file which is nothing but a TEXT file is Corrupted?

Q3: Is there another program beside "Subtitle Workshop" that can verify a Subtitle for Correction?

Q4: Is there a Freeware Program that can convert an SRT Subtitle to English and keep it in a working condition?

    Thanks,

    G!

Q1: I have a Philips 5990 and as I recall, not only does the .srt have to have the same name as the AVI you're watching, I'm pretty sure both files need to either be in their own separate folder, or there are no other .srt files in the root directory. I recall that with several .srt's in the root directory, the DVD player gets confused and can't find the correct one.

    Hope this helps.

    Q4: Check out Jubler.

General rules for Philips DVD players and SRT files...

    1) The SRT file MUST be named the same as the video before the first period ( . ) character. For example, if your video is called MYVIDEO.AVI then your SRT file needs to be called MYVIDEO.SRT.
    2) If you edit an SRT file on a non-Windows system, it will seem "corrupted" to the Philips player. The only fix is to edit it in Windows. Or if you are really good, you can convert the end of line character under Linux/Unix with the "tr" program to use CR-LF instead of just LF.

    Q4 answer - No.

I beg to differ. Jubler has a translation feature (using Google Translation). It's meant to be for personal use, and not distributed of course, but it's there and it works.

  5. Hi Vitoarc & Jman,

THANKS for both of your Helps!

The answer to my delimma for sure is putting Both the AVI and the associated SRT in the "Same" folder ... it's own little private folder ... because when I got home I started playing around with having the SRT in a folder and just on my Thumbdrive.

FYI ... I put my movies on a 8GB USB Thumbdrive and plug it in my Philips 5980 and watch it ... I got sloppy and left the AVI and SRT under the main Folder with other AVI's ... even though those AVI's had no SRT ... like you guys said the machine Could NOT find the SRT.

While I was looking around on VideoHelp for solution(s) to my problem I came across another thread here that suggested conversion ... so I went to Tools section of VH and I found "AVIAddXSubs 9.4" and I used that ... well it added my SRT subtitle to the AVI ... and also the other Nice thing it was that it made the SRT FONTS much larger ... so lot easier to read ... so this is also a Great Option

Hope the above tip will help out someone else on the Forum ... VH has great group of folks hanging around here ... "Always" Helpful!

    THANKS again guys!

    G!

  6. I've been using AviAddXSubs with my Philips players for awhile. I don't like the way Philips handles external .srt files. But I would save them because if you get a set top box, like WD HDTV player, later on, it may not play the .divx subs. In that case you can just include the .srt files with the .divx.

Somebody needs to come up with a solution for .divx embedded subs. Seems only Divx Player can play them on the PC and .divx certified DVD players. If you throw away the .srt files you can end up hunting for downloads again later on.
