Im after a reasonably priced living room tv player, that can play the widest range of hi bitrate xvid/divx/standard dvds. I do not care for blu ray, and do not have a widescreen tv (yet!)... so an upscaling model is not that necessary. I had an old Philips DVD player that could play avi (grey DVP model i think, rather wide thin design), but with the odd xvid or divx file, the video would jump. This was obviously caused by too high a video bitrate with some files, as the picture would still show. Some other Philips players would play the same files when tested on friends machines at the time (which they no longer have), but my own Philips model would get all jittery. It wasnt a massive problem as most files would work, but I eventually gave it away, so Im now after a new one with a much wider range of avi playback.

Ive been recommended the Sumvision Phoenix Premium player, it is amazingly cheap (£30), alot of great reviews, its seems to play (and do) almost everything, but there are a few poor reviews also with players failing or freezing.. obviously its a dead cheap build, but if it worked for 5 yrs, id be reasonably happy. http://www.ebuyer.com/product/139176
Googling around, ive been told to avoid such £30 players (my old Philips one is now also around that price), and go for Pioneer instead? The problem there is that they are rather expensive, but ive been told they really do play almost all xvid/divx videos, even when high bitrate, eg with the Pioneer DV575A http://www.ciao.co.uk/Pioneer_DV575A__Review_5585972

Can anyone recommend a player with a much better build quality than the Sumvision, that plays all high bitrate xvid/divx files they have ever thrown at it? Something around £70 or under would be good, eg if I could find a Pioneer at that price. I would go for a more modern Philips player since Ive tried them in the past, but they are all still very wide in design, and some sites still state they are still not that good with avi playback. Should I really just save up for a £100+ Pioneer if they really are that good, or are there much cheaper Pioneers available that will do the job of playing almost all high bitrate avis? Im not after anything special, just a basic dvd player that can play all high bitrate avis (divx/xvid).

thanks for any suggestions if possible
