Hello all,
I'm new here and hopefully won't make a fool of myself. Sincere apologies if this has been addressed before. If so, please point me to the right answer???
I'm trying to convert a 3gp file to something that can be played most universally, mpeg, avi maybe.
When I try all the available stuff like Any Video Converter, Movavi, Womble MPEG Editor, I get about the first 25% of video converted and then nothing. What do I need to do. Have Windows Vista and plenty memory and processing power.

Your source file might be damaged. Does it stop at the same place?

h264 MP4 is a safe bet for playability.

The only assured format for playing everywhere is Mpeg1"Quality is cool, but don't forget... Content is King!"

No, it's different with each option I use. And it plays fine on the Reganam 3gp player. Go figure.

OK, so what's h264? Forgive my ignorance. And which converter do u recommend as best?

If you want simple, try WinFF. If you want lots of options, try xvid4psp

h264 is a video compression technology that's very popular. Movies that you can watch on an iPod are h264 encoded.

There are many ways to compress a video file. You can use DivX, h264, mpeg, etc. These are called codecs - Compress/Decompress. You compress the file when you convert it to a new format, such as h264, and you decompress it on the fly as you're playing it back on your computer.

Audio and video codecs reside inside a container, such as a 3GP, MP4 or AVI file
