What tools are out there to encode eac3 7.1?

I can't seem to find anything open source, probably not surprising. What software is out there for Linux or Windows that allows one to convert flac or various other 7.1 audio to eac3 7.1? libav seems to only do 5.1 eac3.

You can try eac3to,it does eac3 but requires some setup for it.

If free Blackmagic Davinci can't do it through the embedded Fairlight, you'll have to "borrow" the official Dolby Producer Suite or try the other paid methods (Not many - few DD+/eac3 7.1 encoders).

Yeah, so, thanks for the help. Apparently, Plex has one, but Idon't see any reference anywhere (other than Plex) to eac3_eae/. Wish I could find it! They use it to transcode to eac3 7.1 via an ffmpeg external library they seem to have.

eac3_eae is decoder, the obsolete one, since ffmpeg unlike libav have native eac3 7.1 decoder

That's really odd then. Plex transcodes TrueHD to eac3 according to their own screen when playing a TrueHD, and, the command line running references eac3_eae, and, the plex screen says transcoding from trueHD 7.1 to eac3 7.1

I've been trying to crack this code since roughly 2011 without complete success.

A number of years ago, I decided I wanted to use h.264/avc and later h.265/hevc along with DD+ or E-AC-3. The sticking point is that I wanted to preserve 7.1 channels.

With amazing codecs like HEVC, I've been stuck having to maintain the original audio for any of my 7.1 channel encodes to not lose those channels.

DD+ 7.1 and HEVC are the ultimate advantage because you have hardware playback from home theatre devices that don't understand other 7.1 encoding methods such as AAC, and you have the smaller size rather than having to maintain the original audio. E-AC3 is superior to regular AC3 encoding as well.

Eventually, I was able to start encoding true 7.1 channel audio, but I gave up a coupe of years ago trying to get it included in an MKV file. Any of the muxing tools, such as MKVToolnix would misidentify these audio files because of the nature of E-AC-3 7.1 with the 4 extra channels to replace two. The muxed result would just be a mess.

I worked to try to get the author of these tools to take a look, but it was always on an "when I have time" effort that spanned years.

I don't know if there is currently a successful way to mix a 7.1 E-AC-3 c=source into a MKV or other container successfully, but if there is then this may be solved.

Yes, you got it. This would be a huge gain for all the reasons you stated! That's why I keep looking. So, your method was able to correct play play (outside of mkv) a eac7.1 audio file just fine (and therefore it would appear correctly formatted)?

PM is necessary, but, is there a way I could try your method of encoding and see what I can do with it?
