    Hi, I'm looking for a program that can hardsubbed a video (.avi) and a subtitle (.ass) that I have with subtitle effects such as fade in/out, while maintaining quality and file size.

    Try avidemux, under filters I think you can choose ass/ssa subtitle and the effects should work.
