I converted my DV to SVCD for a movie of 100 mins onto 2 cds. I used Constant Quality of 75 quality with a max bitrate of 1900 and min of 0. The audio bitrate was set at 128 kbit/s. When I watched it on my computer it was fine, however on my DVD player it came out terrible. It was jerky and there was a lot of artifacts.

I know my DVD player can play SVCD, since I've converted a DivX to SVCD (however on 2 pass VBR and 224 audio bitrate) and it came out fine.

Is it the Constant Quality that screws it up?

    Any ideas?

  2. I had the same problem with a tv cap I had. I then used 2 pass vbr and all was fine. I've used 128, 160, 192, and 224 audio bitrates all succesfully. Video bitrates of 1600 thru 2500 also.

I have an Apex 5131. So, I was a little puzzled when the CQ encoded stream played with very noticeble jerkiness.

As far as the artifacts. Are you watching the clip at 50%? The DV codec is set to replay the video on the computer at 50%? When replaying the clip, either zoom or change the display settings to 100%. At least you'll more likely be able to see any "artifacts".

Ok, so the CQ might explain the jerkyness.

But the artifacts weren't in the DV version, neither in the MPEG verison when played on the computer. There were green spots on the screen, and a lot of blockness and images from previous frames occuring when played on the DVD player. Maybe going to 2 pass will get rid of them.
