Ok I have the insider account for IGN.com (just for a short term to get the game videos and walkthroughs, I'm not going to be renewing).

I went in for some videos for the New Super Mario Bros Wii and one of the clips is advertised as being a 1280x720 wmvhd file. Most of the others have been quicktime files at 640x360. Now how in the world can it be a 720 file when the wii MAXES out at 480p?

Why did they bother to upconvert a video clip? I mean it just makes the video file larger to download.

I'll post a gspot screen shot when itis done downloading in a minute.

Edit ok its a 856x480 video. And the odd thing is its inside a black border for some reason.

Shouldn't the video be 720x480 formatted to 16:9? How can it be larger than this? It had to be upconverted right?

    Edit - screen shot:

Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw?

Prob the same way web cams do, and they have been doing it for many years. You know the ones..they are usually stated as 640x480 to start. The tipiclely state the hype as interpolation. It might have been upconverted, or GSpot could be wrong..not sure. Post a short sample and let someone test.

I don't know if I can legally. Technically speaking the wmv hd clip is from the pay member section only. The lower def stuff is free - still look sok but not as sharp obviously.

What do you mean by interpolation? I'm not familiar with the term.

  4. I bet it's there conversion software. I just noticed the samething with the new version of Handbrake. If I used strict anamorphic settings and want to leave it at 480 it would always force it to 856. to keep the same aspect ratio
tgpo famous MAC commercial, You be the judge?

That is unusual. Why would it force it to make it "larger" while keeping the same aspect ratio? Isn't that degrading the video quality by "adding" video to it that isn't there?
