Hey all, new here, more into home audio, but I have been interested in Sony Beta and Super Beta for a while. I recently picked an SL-810D Super and and the aforementioned SL-HFR70. I sent the SL-HFR70 to a buddy, he is having some trouble with it. If I understand him, when he inserts a tape, it's transported into the machine correctly and then is ejected seconds later, autoplay does not start correctly and he can't start play manually as the machine ejects the tape. I have a few old tapes and they all worked fine for me, he says that he has tried about 10 tapes and only one plays correctly. I don't know if it's out of sync or what the problem may be, my skills on these is pretty basic, he also does not have the remote control for it. Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks.

ISTR that these types of problems are consistent with those Orsetto has mentioned here for Beta decks. (Have seen some other and similar issues on that list myself.) Unfortunately, repairs may only be worth pursuing for their more top-of-the-line decks -- say, HF750, HF1000, ED series -- and only then if you still rely on using the deck and / or have some important tapes you need to access. Finding the right person to do it and being able to obtain parts may be a big problem, at this point.
When in Las Vegas, don't miss the Pinball Hall of Fame Museum http://www.pinballmuseum.org/ -- with over 150 tables from 6+ decades of this quintessentially American art form.

Hey Seeker, thanks for the info, I guess I have a lot to learn about these machines. It's probably a good idea to run a search for the Orsetto's posts, I hate to give up on the machine, even though it's not a TOTL machine. I'd like to get an idea of the nature of the problem, may help me avoid problems in the future, thanks again.
