I am looking to download some files but i am confused on which has the better quality.
I dont want to download large files but dont mind approx 1.5gb to 3gb.
my quandrie is as follows which of the 4 x Bluray files are better.
720p Bluray x264
BRRip H264
720p BRRip.xvid
720 Bluray nHDx264

There's not enough information to tell which one is better. Generally H.264 offers higher compression than XviD and smaller file sizes at the same resolution. But people that upload videos to the net may not have any idea what they are doing, so quality varies quite a bit.
And be aware that displaying H.264 HD video takes a fair amount of computer power and a decent video card.
And welcome to our forums. -
Are the studios offering Blu-ray rips for legal download now??

forget about xvid... xvid and divx is the past... like black&white TV sets
x264 for quality.
720p movies:
1.5GB - quality is not so good, but watchable
2.5GB - quite ok
4GB - very nice
6-8GB - i see no sense about this, 4GB is enough.
of course it all depends on movie length, picture characteristics and encoding settings. -
IMO, 1.5 GB is below the threshold of even "acceptable" quality, assuming 720p, and a movie ~ 2 hours. Quality does not go down at a constant rate, it drops precipitously below 2 mbps (h.264), more or less. Just from my own observations and experience, others may differ. To my eyes, inter-picture prediction and motion compensation are badly degraded by insufficient bitrate below 2 mbps.
It will of course be much more obvious on a large-ish HDTV.
I'm quite certain the studios don't sanction legal Blu-Ray rips for download. Not anything anyone would want, that is. You may find sites that claim to be legal, and they may not be illegal where they originate, strictly speaking. But where *you* live is probably another matter.Pull! Bang! Darn! -
Thanks folks.
All good info.
Forum Troll, Sarcasm wont get you far in life, but used in the right context can be quite funny.
