  1. I'm having this problem lately. When I open a video file with Virtual Dub(or any other video editing software) I can't preview the video All I hear is the sound and the cursor continues on until the end of the preview. That doesn't happen when I try to view the video with a normal media player. I have all the needed codecs installed(k-lite codec pack) and this is the first time this problem appeared. I haven't modified any video settings since it's been long since I used a video editing program. So,what is the solution to this problem?

  2. What kind of video? (use mediainfo)

You probably need to enable vfw decoder for your video

The only good codec pack is a dead codec pack.

That said, if this is happening in all video editors I would be looking at your graphics drivers. Most editors use the hardware overlay for the primary preview window. If something has gone screwy there then you will get a black window and no image.

Uninstall your graphics driver and reboot your PC to re-install it.

And get rid of the codec pack. You don't need it, and it just leads to lazy thinking and behaviour that will eventually screw up your system.

Let's not get so extremist, shall we? Lots of folks use (certain) codec packs without any ill effects.

I stand by my statement. See my last line for my reasoning.

Like anything, the final choice is always that of the user, however codec packs are generally used by people who little to no understanding of how codecs really work, and will never learn if they just dump a hundred different codecs onto their system every time one video doesn't play properly.

    But each to their own.

  6. It's true that codec packs can wreck video playback - if they are stupidly assembled, "cover everything twice over" packs. In that case, I certainly agree they're rubbish. K-Lite was one of the worst offenders years ago.

Nowadays, I don't think the problem is as bad; the number of people encountering problems with K-Lite seems to have dropped considerably. I've heard this was because K-Lite cleaned up their act somewhat because well-assembled, minimalistic packs like CCCP appeared, but I'm not exactly sure of the veracity of that.

I'm personally a CCCP user, and I recommend it without hesitation because I know what's in it - which is basically what any competent guide would tell you to put together: MPC-HC, ffdshow, DirectVobSub and Haali's splitter in a customised and tested package. The maintainers are experienced encoders and very knowledgeable.

The only codecs package i recommend is ffdshow, much better than ccp and k-lite with much less complaints.
    I think,therefore i am a hamster.

  8. CCCP is mainly ffdshow...plus the other things I mentioned that mostly anyone will want to install anyway. Don't know about K-Lite's specifics.

  9. I mainly have problem with previewing videos in Advanced Video Codec. I could do that before long So what should I do? I don't want to uninstall k-lite codec pack since it's one of the best codec packs around. I have installed the x264 codec seperately since it wasn't inside the k-lite codec pack.(The Whole name of the codec is "x264-H264/AVC encoder". The settings are on default value

ffdshow (found in K Lite provides this.

  11. You're going to want to change that to 'ffmpeg-mt' instead of 'libavcodec' if you want multithreaded decoding.

    Back to the op's question.

Try the following ... this may simply be an issue with directshow.
