hi guys i am having some trouble burning avi files to dvd i am using the latest burning studio (ashampoo 9) to convert avi files to dvd format i have tried lowering/increasing write speed but still no joy. The troubleshooting guide tells me something about not being able to acsess bluray/ or the aplication is being elsewhere??? this is gobledegook to me. i have had some problems recently with a new graphics card being installed to enable me to use my hd telly rather than a monitor. when the discs do burn the files they will only play on my pc and not on a standalone bog standard dvd player i have tried buying better quality discs but to no avai.
i have been told that the burning studio my be corupted but my antivirus scans etc havenet revealed anything. any any help someone can offer me would be well apreciated. do i need a new burning studio if so what one? and please remember guys i am new to all this so please keep the lanuage simple enough so even i can understand and the burning studio if new one is recomended needs to be just as easy. many thanks shakybaby

In the interests of keeping it simple

    1. Uninstall Ashampoo
    2. Install DVD Flick or ConvertXtoDVD to convert your avi files to DVD
    3. Install Imgburn for burning to disc. Use the Help menu to find guides.

Try having a look at AVI2ISO, its 100% free software and uses nothing but free software, and can even burn your DVD for you after. Its slower than ConvertXtoDVD but the results are better as it uses HCEnc to rebuild the video to match the best bitrate

As it uses AVISynth to perform the work, you have a huge possability to tweak the source, but the defaults work fine

I use ConvertXtoDVD myself and it handles AVI and MKV with no problems (included 1920x1080p sources), the only things sorely missing are the options to adjust the brightness or colours (which they said would be in v3.xx, but I'm still waiting), and the simple filters they said would be included ... again, still waiting

I can convert a standard 700MB AVI to DVD in about 12 minutes, then another 8 minutes to burn it. But thats with a Q6600 running at 3.4ghz, my old AMD 6000+ used to take about 3 hours at the highest quality setting

The very high resolution hi-defination MKV's take a lot longer, roughly an hour as it has to convert a 1920x1080p source to DVD specs which takes some effort on the softwares part, plus the fact they refuse to impliment true multi-core useage just quoting 'its fast enough already', and also refusing to support any 3rd party encodes (its good enough with what we use), so it runs on one core only

But apart from the annoyances like that, its one of the very few video converters that don't give out absolute abismal quality and keep sthe audio in sync for pretty much most common video formats, and supports a hell of a lot more that other converters. Its also updated pretty frequently with minor updates maybe a couple of times month to fix 'issues' that crop up, unlike other software where you get nothing for 6 month or more then they try to charge you again for the 'major' update which are usually big fixes

It will also automatically insert the vast majority of subtitle files, so you can add subtitles to anything if they are available, and will handle any number of audio tracks (some baulk and can't do more than one audio track), plus will happily convert DTS audio to either 2-channel stereo or 5.1 surround and even try to simulate 5.1 surround from a 2-channel source

Pity about the lack of any filters or even basic brightness/colour options though

Oh, and it ONLY converts to DVD specs, nothing else
