I just downloaded a video that I really want to watch on my big screen and my 360 is the only device I have that is capable of outputting in high def to my tv. The format is h.264 in an mp4 container with mp4a MPEG-4 AAC 6 channel audio. I'm pretty sure I've watched h.264 on it before but not high def and it probably had mp3 sound.

Can anyone suggest a high def format that I can convert to that is compatible with the 360's codecs and possibly a guide on this site so that I get it right the first time? I want to lose as little video quality as humanly possible and it would be nice to retain the 6 channel audio.

this site is very helpful and it is all thanks to the great community
    thanks

  2. H.264 in a MP4 container is fine (usually), but the audio has to be in 2 channel AAC-LC format.

You could demux the video and audio streams, convert the audio to 2 channel AAC-LC, and remux them. Yamb should let you do the remuxing. As for converting the audio from 6 to 2 channels, something along the lines of BeLight or similar may do that for you.

This should work in theory, but the 360 can be picky about what H.264 streams it plays, for example it only accepts a maximum of 3 reference frames.

The only way to tell would be to try it and see...

I can't get belight to convert the audio. I think i have it set up correctly; i put besweet in the same dir as belight along with the two dll files from nero (aacenc32.dll and aac.dll.) No matter what settings I use besweet crashes right after i hit the start button. Are there any other progs that can convert from 5.1 aac to 2.0 aac?

Possibly the aac file that I extract in Yamb is no good. Is there a better program for demuxing?

Sorry I am so ignorant about this, I am used to playing with xvids w/ mp3 audio....this high def stuff is all new to me.

  4. I found a useful little guide for 5.1 to 2 channel AAC conversion here:

    http://www.avforums.com/forums/xbox-360-multimedia-streaming/725306-how-do-i-convert-m...el-stereo.html

    It needs MediaCoder Audio Edition.

Or, convert the audio to AC3 to keep the 5.1. Don't remember if the 360 takes AC3 with h264 in the MP4 container. Something is tugging at the back of my head saying 'No' though...

You could always convert to divx and ac3 in an avi container to retain the hd and 5.1 audio. Using divx in one pass with a Q of 2 should keep most (virtually indistinguishable, just sit a little further from the TV... ) of the quality of the video.
    Have a good one,

You should be able to run it through Xvid4PSP, Use the MP4 XBOX setting. Set the Video to 'copy'. It should re-encode the audio for the XBOX.

This will take the AC3 5.1 and make it AAC stereo, won't it?

Try converting to wmv with 5.1. Do the audio seperate and do the video to wmv. Then it will play it. Make sure its wma 10 pro audio so the 5.1 is really 5.1.

Can't recommend a program off the top of my head - super might handle the 264.
Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw?

Yes it will, the Xbox 360 will only accept AAC audio in stereo, not 5.1. If you want 5.1 audio on the Xbox 360 then your only options are either AVI with 5.1 AC3, or WMV with 5.1 WMA pro.

Xvid4PSP has a 720p "AVI hardware HD" profile, which works fine, and it should let you encode the audio to 6 channel AC3, but are AAC channels mapped the same as AC3? (i'm really not sure).

WMV with 5.1 audio is harder to achieve using freeware tools, Tmpgenc Xpress is by far the easiest way to do that, but alas it isn't free.
