  1. What do you think of the new RED Scarlet camera that will be available in Fall 2009? Supposedly the base model (3K resolution) with lens will be around $3000. This is going to be some serious competition for other cameras. The first sample video and stills look pretty nice. Everything is interchangeable which is cool.

Well, once you do the add-ons, the price may go up a lot. Also, you have a proprietary video Redcode RAW codec that will limit your editing options. (Final Cut Pro, anyone?) Personally, I'm thrilled with the possibilities offered by the Red products. A lot of TV series, features, and commercials are turning to them, invading Panavision's territory. It will be interesting to see what the lower-priced Scarlet unit will deliver. For consumers and most prosumers, the hidden costs of extras and editing requirements may not make it a feasible choice.

Why own the cam? Rent it for the shoot. Take home the hard drive.

I would buy this to learn on, since it'd let me use my current stock of Nikon lenses.

Which Nikon lenses are you talking about? Because I did some research last summer for a graduate film school on new equipment and found that while the Red One, and future higher-grade Red cams (like the 5K) are quite adaptable to many lenses, the Scarlet wasn't. You had to either stick with Red's own lenses (which are NOT 35mm-based, and I haven't field-tested their lenses so I'm skeptical), or you'd have to get an adapter which I'm not even sure exists yet (vaporware).

If you want a good upgrade path, go with the Red One (or better). If you want a decent compact camera RIGHT NOW for a great price (and plan on reselling the cam to a 3rd party later), then the Scarlet is a deal.

I've not done any research. I'm just saying that $3k isn't a lot of money for a good camera.

    Now serious.

It has the potential to be next Video Toaster - giving the little guy the edge that was previously only available to big bucks studios or their minions. It will all depend upon the entry price though. Cameras have been brought closer to real life price levels for the features in last few years. The RED Scarlet price/features really needed and used could be the difference. True hybrid cameras are an eventuallity and the modular approach of the RED Scarlet adds alot of appeal to those who know what they want in a camera. This may also be it's demise, as most people do not know what they want or need in a camera.
