    a friend wants to convert WMV (or other) to AVI - i have links to ALL-to-AVI and Dr DIVX but the feedback on them put me of supplying links saying they crash and dont work well etc..

    is there any good simple software and simple guides...?

    Try either Avidemux or XviD4PSP, which both support a number of input formats including wmv. In the tools section for each there are some guides which should provide a good start.
