Might sound noob but just wondering. I am trying to join 15 avis together into one file and i get an out of sync problem during that gets worse as it goes on. I check the file info in virtualdubmod and noticed that some of the avis have a different audio length to video by as much or as little as 200ms? e.g. video of one of them is 3:17.46 and audio is 3:17.44. AM i right in thinking that the audio of the appended avi will be starting too soon then? To fix this will I skip to end of the file, cut the last bit off i.e. 200ms and save it? will that fix it? It seems to get the audio and video at the same lenght in file info but haven't tried to append one yet. any help would be great. if this is nothing to do with audio sync what else causes it?

Looks like I was on the right track, this was taken from the virtualdubmod website talking bout the append function. I'm just having trouble getting the audio and video lengths to match up. removing a frame at a time and saving etc.
"What this means is that if you're trying to use the feature to join two different video files, you have to be a bit careful about how the first file is trimmed. You want the durations of the audio and video to match as closely as possible to minimize the desync on the second segment. One way to do this is to purposely cut a few frames off the end of the first segment and reprocess it in direct/direct mode; unless the "cut off" setting has been disabled in Video > Select Range, VirtualDub will trim the audio as closely as possible to the length of the video, assuming you cut back far enough. The finer the granularity of the audio, the better, so uncompressed audio will give you a more precise cut here." -
First, give a try to the latest VirtualDub "classic".
Second, it's safer to use Avisynth's "AlignedSplice":
