I have succesfully backed up DVDs to DVD-R but have now bought an LG bluray reader. I would like to back up blu ray discs to DVD-R. Is there a way of doing this?

Yep, ANyDVD HD to decrypt and BD Rebuilder to shrink it.

Yes, you can rip, but the only rippers are commercial products. There are no free rippers. You can buy either AnyDVD HD or DVDFab HD Decrypter.
Short answer - the way BluRay encryption works makes it prohibitively time consuming for someone to keep up with changes in the keys for free, so it's only those 2 commercial products (neither of which is based in the USA) that can afford the cost of buying new BluRay discs and updating the software to deal with changes. You are basically paying those companies to assign staff to the task of enabling you to decrypt your BluRay discs.
