    Hey all,

I'm trying to convert some vobs to avis with virtualdub. The vobs are interlaced, and vdub's built-in deinterlace set on blend seems to work, but now diagonal lines appear jagged. Do you know how to resolve this, or can you point me to a tut? Thanks.

  2. Are you sure your VOB files are interlaced? VirtualDub's MPEG import filter performs pulldown on progressive MPEG files marked for 3:2 pulldown. Try using VirtualDubMod instead. It leaves the frames progressive at 23.976 fps.

If the video is hard telecined film source try using the IVTC filter instead of deinterlacing.

If your video is truly interlaced the blend deinterlace shouldn't leave jagged edges. But it will look like double exposures when motions are large. Did you resize the video before deinterlacing? That would cause problems like you describe. Deinterlace before resizing or other filtering.

Try Donald Graft's Smart Deinterlace in Edge Directed Interoplate mode. It's the best deinterlacer for VirtualDub.

Well, the vobs are extracted from dvd iso's, and they exhibit the line separation that looks like interlacing. I don't know how to test whether it's truly interlace, or if it's that other stuff you mentioned.
As for resize, yes, I put the resize filter first in the list, then deinterlace next.
I'll try reversing and see what happens, and then compare it to that Donald Graft thing.
    Thanks a bunch!

  4. Open you VOB in VirtualDubMod. You may see no comb artifacts there.
