I use the cheapest disks I can find and burn at 8x, have made over 300 vcd's this way and all work great in many different brands of recorders, the secret is the 8x on cheap disks.

  5. a brand called "PNY Technologies" www.pny.com. if you use this brand of CDRs, then it will play on DVD players that are not CDR capable but is VCD capable.

  6. There is unfortunately a lot of inaccurate info in this thread...

Scenario 1 -- You own a DVD player that is designed to play CD-R/W media (it's in the manual)
Standard media rules apply. CD-R media from those companies that produce their own media and do not OEM production to third parties generally have the best quality media (e.g., Eastman Kodak, Mitsubishi/Verbatim).

All other media (including brand name ones like Imation and Sony) use OEMs which mean that quality between batches in uncertain. Nevertheless, there are still some good media here to find. Unfortunately, there is the risk of getting a bad batch as well.

Scenario 2 -- You own a DVD player that was not designed to play CD-R/W media (it is not in the manual)
You are kind of on your own. No one media is guaranteed to work better than any other and don't let any advocates of one brand or another convince you. Your player wasn't designed to play CD-R/W media and it is not surprising that it does so poorly.

If you experiment with different brands of CD-R/W media, you will often find one that works. In these cases, CD-RW media often works better.

The DVD compatibility list on this site may be a starting point in find some media that work for you machine.
