  2. rar files are usually created with winrar, and it can put them back together and extract whatever is compressed in them. 7zip is another option.

double click on the the that ends in .rar or the newer style .001

".001" aren't rar files, they're just split, recombine with HJsplit.

    Rar sets are either
    file.rar
    file.r00
    file.r01
    ...

    or
    file.part1.rar
    file.part2.rar
    ...

Ummm... why would you want or need to join them ??

You open the main file and extract the contents

ahhhh, You still need to join the .001 files that minidv2dvd is talking about, they are not self extracting.

Oh, & by the way, I think the OP is talking about volumed rar files, not one single rar file, even though both types are self extracting, I don't think the OP realised that.

Yeah, i've had tons of set's of rar files that were named and numbered exactly like what is being talked about.

I've never had to join them, just open the main file and the contents are extracted.

  9. I beg to differ sir, & I think you are mistaken, I have never seen a rar file that had an extension of .001, .002, etc.

    http://www.fileinfo.com/extension/001

There is however rar files ending in .r01, .r02, .r03, etc, but not plain numbers.

    Not mistaken at all.

All the extra split files do not even show up as a .rar file but the main one does, open the main file and the entire contents extract.

    Done it many times.

No, neither are "self extracting". A self-extracting archive is an .exe, it does not need Winrar or any external program.

I'm not trying to be objectionable, but 90% of the information given in above posts is wrong or misleading.

In any case, 7-Zip is free and will deal with most kinds of archives.

    Another vote for 7-Zip.

It handles .rar files fine. If you have the full set. While it knows when a zip file set is incomplete it doesn't seem to know it for rars all the time. It even handles the h-j split files. My favorite compressed file utility so far.

Now if you want to MAKE .rar files you have no choice. Its Winrar or its command line utility that comes with it. Uncompressing .rar files can be done with free utilities but making them you have to pay for the commercial program.
