rar files are usually created with winrar, and it can put them back together and extract whatever is compressed in them. 7zip is another option.
double click on the the that ends in .rar or the newer style .001 -

Ummm... why would you want or need to join them ??
You open the main file and extract the contents -

Yeah, i've had tons of set's of rar files that were named and numbered exactly like what is being talked about.
I've never had to join them, just open the main file and the contents are extracted. -
I beg to differ sir, & I think you are mistaken, I have never seen a rar file that had an extension of .001, .002, etc.

There is however rar files ending in .r01, .r02, .r03, etc, but not plain numbers. -
This is what happens when you download videos.

Not mistaken at all.
All the extra split files do not even show up as a .rar file but the main one does, open the main file and the entire contents extract.
Done it many times. -

In any case, 7-Zip is free and will deal with most kinds of archives. -
Another vote for 7-Zip.
It handles .rar files fine. If you have the full set. While it knows when a zip file set is incomplete it doesn't seem to know it for rars all the time. It even handles the h-j split files. My favorite compressed file utility so far.
Now if you want to MAKE .rar files you have no choice. Its Winrar or its command line utility that comes with it. Uncompressing .rar files can be done with free utilities but making them you have to pay for the commercial program.
