    Question is in 2 parts

1 Is there any decent free software that will rip and compress to DVD5 discs with modern protection on?

2 Is there any pay/share software that works as well as DVDfab but is cheaper - I dont like the new prices or license!

Ideally it should be able to rip to mobile formats. Recommendations welcome.[/b]

  2. Dvdfabhddecrypter is free. It rips the newest movies and is updated frequently to beat the newest protections.

To shrink, use dvdshrink, which is also free, but has not been updated in years.

As far as ripping, you could also use anydvd. Anydvd is not free, but is updated all the time to beat the newest protections.

Once ripped, you would need to convert if you wanted mobile formats.

Yep to add to dv8ted2 - if you use payware anydvd you can rip the dvd with ANY rip/transcode program. It runs in the background while you rip to decrypt the dvd so the program can see it. Otherwise you'll have to use an updated rip program to copy to the harddrive first then transcode or convert to the desired format. You don't have to use anydvd, it just makes it quicker by not needing to rip to the computer first.

    So, if I have this right;

    1 Rip with DVDfab hddecrypter
2 Shrink the video_ts with dvdshrink
3 Burn the new video_ts with roxio or nero etc

Well its a bit more involved but if it works............
    Thanks folks

Actually I recommend burning with Imgburn. It burns more compatible discs.

DVDFab HD Decrypter to rip (Free)
DVD Shrink for small reductions (Free)
DVD Rebuilder with HCEnc for bigger compression jobs (Free)
Imgburn to burn the results (Free)

Uninstall Roxio and Nero and use the HDD space you free up for something useful instead.
