    Hello,

I have been using windows movie maker for creating home videos for the last 6 years. For the first time, WMM is crashing just by clicking a video/audio clip. The 'WMM has to shutdown' message pops up and recently the WMM window just disappears.

I followed some posts based on this and tried to uncheck everything under the compatibility tab. It didn't work. I was able to make a DV-AVI of photos with music track and it worked fine but there's something wrong with the video clips now.

My PC is winXP SP2 everything is updated.

    Any help appreciated. Thanks!

did you install any codec packs or programs recently? maybe you can uninstall or go back to a restore point if you have that enabled

    Hi,

I had to convert VOB files to avi. So I installed Winff software and selected fullscreen AVI option. The converted files loads okay in WMM and I started editing. After a while it started crashing and now the whole WMM disappears by just clicking. I uninstalled Winff but still no use.

Didn't try to uninstall and install WMM (can we do that?). But thats the only change....

You seem to have ignored poisondeathray's very important question: Does this problem occur with clips that once worked with your setup? If so, your setup has changed. It could be that your hard drive has developed a bad sector, it could be that you added some software that overwrote something that WMM needed, etc. In diagnosing things, always try to go back to the last known good configuration.

If your setup does continue to function properly with older clips, then that's an important clue as well.

And yes, you can uninstall software, and then reinstall. See "add/remove" program options in the Control Panel.

You could try reregistering the WMM filters and some Directshow components using the .bat file on RehanFX's site.

You said you made a "fullscreen AVI" from a VOB using WinFF. Well, there is NO DV-AVI preset in WinFF. The "fullscreen AVI" from that converter is Xvid, which is incompatible with Windows Movie Maker.

There are MANY varieties of AVI. You picked the wrong one. If you want to make a DV-AVI out of a VOB, try Xvid4PSP. (Disregard its misleading name. Xvid4PSP converts all kinds of video files.)

Hi again. Sorry for getting back late....

Yes, I checked with old video clips and WMM disappears as soon as I select the clip from the video track. It didn't happen before with the old video clips.

I converted VOB files to AVI using Winff. It had 3 varieties of AVI, MS AVI; fullscreen AVI and widescreen AVI. I opted for fullscreen and there was no problem with loading the new AVI file to WMM.

Since then I am having problems with WMM. I find this annoying now and I didn't find WMM in the add/remove programs. I have Win XP with SP3.

If you could guide me in reinstalling WMM that would be great as I am so accustomed to WMM.

    Thank you all.
