I've been on hold on HP's help line for almost 3 hrs and my phone battery just died. What kind of shit is that?
In the meantime, I tried chatting with one of their reps and they solved nothing.
They answered none of my questions and ended the chat abruptly. They sent me this link, which I've read before which says nothing about a notebook losing that much power overnight when fully powered down, and no hardware attached when in storage. Bunch of tards.
Me : Battery drains 25 - 30% per day when notebook is completely shutdown. No hardware is plugged in while unit is in storage.
[An agent will be with you shortly.]
[You are now chatting with Shanna .]
Shanna : Welcome to HP Total Care for HP Notebooks.
Shanna : I understand that the Notebook battery drain 25 - 30% per day, am I correct?
Me : Yes, I know that 1 to 2% is normal, but 25 to 30% is way too much.
Shanna : Let us perfrom battery health check.
Shanna : Battery health check will give the exact status of the Notebook battery.
Shanna : Could you please let me know the Operating System installed in the Notebook is Vista or Xp?
Me : Vista Premium 32bit
Shanna : Thank you for the information.
Shanna : Are you chatting from the same notebook that has this issue?
Me : yes
Me : I can go to my desktop if that helps.
Shanna : Here are the steps for battery health check:
Shanna : 1. The battery health check option is located in HP total care Advisor in Vista notebooks. Double click on the HP total Care advisor icon the desktop. Now you would see the HP total Care Advisor program. Double click on the Battery Icon in Hp total care advisor.
Shanna : 2. Double click on the Launch HP battery Check for More information.
3 Now the Battery Check will start. It will run for a Minute or Two.
Shanna : I appreciate with your work.
Me : It lists the battery health as Good
Shanna : That confirm that the Notebook battery is fine.
Shanna : I will provide the weblink which has steps how to increase battery life.
Shanna : Please perfrom the steps that will fix the issue.
Me : Yes, but why does it drain so much when powered down?
Shanna : Here is the weblink for 'How to Improve the Performance of the Battery':
Shanna : http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01297640&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&jumpi...reg_R1002_USEN
Me : Shanna, I've read that before, but it doesn't explain the rapid drain.
Shanna : Please perfrom the steps listed in the weblink that will fix the issue.
Shanna : Have a good night.
Shanna : Thank you for contacting HP Total Care Real-Time chat support. If you need further assistance, please contact us again at: http://www.hp.com/support/chat. Chat support is available 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week.

What I would try. Fully charge the battery, shut down the laptop and remove the battery. Try the battery the next day and see if it's still fully charged. Maybe the battery is losing charge overnight internally.
Or there is something in the laptop that is still running after shutdown. But that might be a bit harder to find.
Some things I can think of:
Modem or LAN adapter running. Both of them should have some settings you might change. Power settings in BIOS. Not sure which ones, but take a look. Most laptop BIOS's are pretty basic, so there may not be much there to change.
Someone else may have some better ideas. -
1: Disable wake features in bios
2: Check for bios update and apply
3: If still under warranty have it service checked
Removing the battery to slow discharge rate cures nothing and pointless. -
I'll state the possible obvious
Since you're using Vista, are you sure you're shutting it down, and not just selecting the default "sleep"?
I would also remove the battery to see if it still loses it's charge. If it does, the battery is bad. -
I removed the battery last night and will check it tonight to see what level it's at. To answer stiltman's question: yes, the unit is completely shutdown.
If the battery is only minimally drained, I will then try Redwudz's and Bjs' suggestions.
Thank you for your replies. I'll let you know my findings tonight or the next.-The Mang -
Update
I left the battery out of the notebook for a day and it shows as 100% charged.
I left it out another day, and it still shows as 100% charged.
I was able to do 1 of the 2 things bj suggested.
1: Disable wake features in bios (I could not find a setting for this. Is there a way to access advanced settings on HP notebooks?)
2: Check for bios update and apply (I just updated the BIOS)
Tonight, I will manually disconnect the "wi-fi on" feature before powering down, and leave the battery in. I don't think it will make a difference, but at this point, I'm willing to try anything.
I'll report my findings tomorrow.
If something is "on" while the notebook is completely shutdown, I have absolutely no idea what it may be.
If anyone here does know how to access advanced BIOS settings, please jump in.-The Mang -

Well, at least the battery doesn't seem to be the cause of the problem, so most likely it's something in software (Or possibly hardware) in the laptop. I have a older HP laptop, but I don't recall having that problem.
It does sound like you want to take a close look at the BIOS settings. If nothing there, it may be something in the OS, or in the software from HP. -
louv68 - gigabyte is about the only m.b. that hides the advanced settings, and they are accessed by using cntrl/f1 while in their bios.

Day 3
OK, the battery reads at 100%, but I don't want to jump for joy just yet.
I wonder if updating the BIOS did the trick, or perhaps a combination of that and disconnecting wi-fi prior to shutdown.
I'll try this for a few more nights and see if the problem is solved.
Thanks for all the suggestions.-The Mang -

The last two nights, the battery has read at 100%
Looks like updating the BIOS and shutting off "wi-fi" prior to shutdown did the trick.-The Mang -
Just checked, and it's at 94% The difference now was leaving wi-fi on, then shutting down. I think this is draining the battery when the notebook is off. I will make an effort to remember to disconnect it, prior to shutdown.
