    Can VirtualDub record VHS tapes to AVI format?

    If so, how can I do this?

    I have an old VHS player which my father bought back in the mid 1990s and it still works...

    Is it true that AVI movies can be burned straight to DVD-R and played in a DVD player that is DivX compatible?

    Is it also true that one DVD-R (4.7GB) can house up to 3 to 4 AVI movies?

    You need a video capture device/card to record video from a VCR.

    Whether or not a DVD player that supports Divx will play AVI files depends on various options that might be used during encoding to AVI. Anything listed here might be a problem for some DVD players:

    Yes, you can burn several AVI files on one DVD disc if you wish, but the more files you have, the smaller they will have to be to fit on the disc and the worse the quality will be.

    Okay, how many AVI files would you burn into the DVD-R in order to maintain VHS quality?

    VHS = ~352x480
    After proper deinterlace, a 45-minute video would occupy a 512x384 size, and be 350MB.

    MPEG-4 (like divx) compression also need pre-filtering to reduce noise.

    Do the math.
