I copied an unencrypted vob from my DVD and renamed it with an mpg extension. I had trouble seeking with that file in both Windows Media Player and Media Player Classic. I opened and saved the mpeg2 as a copy in Avidemux, which automatically indexed the file. All went well until I found that Avidemux chopped off the last 27 minutes of audio. Is there a freeware program that could do a more competent job of indexing?

How about you do the job correctly from the start, and not just rename a VOB. Use VOB2MPG to extract the Mpeg correctly from the VOB container and place it in the Mpeg container. Renaming VOBs, while recommended by a minority, is not considered good practice, and often leads to this type of issue.

Thanks for your reply. I have used VOB2MPG before without problems but this time when I got the "successful" popup (at about 24 minutes for a 4.6 GB vob file) VOB2MPG was performing a timestamp discontinuities fix, and was at 41% when it stopped processing. However, it kept displaying the movie in the preview window. When I terminated VOB2MPG in the Task Manager and played the mpg in WMP, it was clear that the indexing had not been fixed.

Try demultiplexing the VOB with Rejig in file mode or with MPEG Streamclip, and remultplexing the resulting files as an .mpg with ImagoMPEG-Muxer.

[Edit] Also, VOB2MPG was just updated to fix an issue with SCR continuity. If you haven't already done so, get the latest version.
