I have 4 external hard drives. 3 of 4 work fine. I've been having problems with my cavalry HD which is 1TB. I can play the movies on my pc but when I try to burn them It fails usually midway through. This started today and I have already wasted 8 dvds so far. When the dvd is burning there are times where it will pause for a second or two then continue on. Sometimes it will say estimated time is an 1 hour when it usually take minutes to burn. I bought this 2 months ago and the warranty is up. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

  2. if you can play them, you might be able to copy them off to another drive. sounds like that one is dying. just a guess but it is probably a seagate hard drive inside, they have been dropping like flies. 2 months is awfully short for a warranty, when a bare drive is usually 1 or 3 years. i'd take it apart, remove the drive and see who made it and run their diagnostic software on it over a usb-ide/sata adapter cable. you may be able to return it directly to the drive manufacturer that way.

You might post a log from your burning program showing one of the failed/bad burning attempts. (If you're using Nero, or any other software that posts the program's serial number in the log, be sure to edit it out, first.) Maybe there's an indication there as to what the problem is.

Are you using quality disc media to burn?

You may also be having issues with the HDDs tripping over each other. Not all USB drives play nicely together.

The log above is from a program I use 90% of the time called copytodvd. I tried nero and everything burns fine. I find this odd, because I never had problems burning files with copytodvd from this hard drive. Does anyone know why this is? All along I thought the problem was with the hard drive.

So it only fails to burn with one burning application ?

Have you also tried imgburn ?

If Nero and Imgburn work, then the problem is most likely CopyToDVD. I would start by a simple uninstall, reboot, reinstall and see if that has any effect.

I reinstalled copytodvd and burned over 5 discs succesfully until all of a sudden the last 2 burns failed. I tried imgburn and nero and the same thing happens with those. I've wasted close 20 discs already. Even the files on my internal hard drive fail to burn. Are there any solutions. I posted my copytodvd and nero logs.

Disc Manufacturer ID: <RITEK>, Media Type ID: <F16>, Product revision number: 1

That's your problem RITEK is considered crappy low grade dvd media. Try using VERBATIM OR TAIYO YUDEN dvd media.

ok, i tried my taiyo yuden disc yesterday and they worked. Today, i tried burning a few discs and they failed or the software says it is going to take 1 hour to burn. I have 2 burners and both do this.

  11. check all your drives and make sure they are in dma mode, not downgraded to dual fifo which will happen if windows sees too many errors in a row.

Thanks for your reply. All drives are in DMA mode. The first 2 taiyo yuden discs I used failed within the first 10 seconds of burning, then the next 8 were succesful. I then burned my ridata and they burned successfully but my dvd player did not recognize them. So I guess those 2 packs I got were just bad batches? I bought 4 100 pack ridata and the first batches burned great. The first 20 or so of the 3rd batch burned and played well, but the rest failed. $40 down the drain I never had problems ridata discs in the past. I then burned some more taiyo yuden discs and one failed at the start like the other two. I find this odd, since Taiyo is very reliable and already I have 3 failed burns out of like 12. It makes me think that the issue is not with the taiyo media. Why do the burns fail right at the start?

Are you multitasking when burning dvd media? Make sure you turn off all programs running in the background when burning dvd media. Such as firewalls, antivirus and spyware programs. Running programs in the background can affect the burning of a dvd disc.

Where did you purchase your TY discs? Over the years there have been reports of some online retailers selling fake TY.

Buy a new 80 wire ide cable for your PIONEER 115 drive. IDE cables have known to fail after a period of time.

Use IMGBURN to burn all your dvd media. Is your PIONEER 115 in a external enclosure or is it installed in your computer case? Big difference if you're using it in a external enclosure. Not all external enclosures will work with PIONEER drives.

I do not multi task while burning. I've been buying from newegg for a while now. I check my media with dvd identifier and they are real. They are TYG03 and I still has some TYG02 from shop4tech. newegg is the cheapest and shipping is extremely fast. I will buy the 80 wire ide cable online today. The Pioneer is installed in my computer case.
