I've extracted vob files from DVD's and normally dragging them to the timeline in Vegas Video is a piece of cake and I can edit as I please.

However, there have been a couple of vob files that for some reason cause my computer to freeze. I discovered that for some reason the CPU usage would hit and stay at 50%. Sometimes after it would sit on this for a while, it would drop, but any movement i make (ie move the cursor to another spot, zoom in etc) the CPU would then jump again to 50%+.

What would be causing this and what can I do to get around this?

The files play fine in VLC player

It seems like Vegas is converting the source. What is in this VOB?

Are you using DV project settings or something else?

Is there a PAL NTSC mismatch?

the video specs (as per the Project Media window) shows

Video: 720x480x32, 29.970 fps, Alpha=None, Field Order, Lower field first, MP

    Audio: 48,000 Hz, Stereo, MPEG

The Project properties is the NTSC DV settings (720x480, 29.970 fps)

im not sure what else to look at - when i play it back, it sometimes plays the audio but then the video doesnt move and the CPU climbs to 50%. when i stop everything, it goes back down to 0.

Im not sure what to do or look for

You would need to demux the VOB to individual tracks and see what is in there. Either MPeg video or the audio is causing Vegas to recode. It could be a complex DVD with multiple video and/or audio tracks.

when i demux the vob, the video is m2v and the audio is ac3. When i drag the ac3 into Vegas it plays fine.

Since Vegas cant play m2v files direct, I used DVD Decrypter again and selected demux, but selected Direct copy of video stream to get a vob file, and also de-selected audio

When i tried to drag the vob file into Vegas, the CPU jumped to 50%+ again.

It seems safe to say that it's the video part thats causing this problem - what can i do to resolve this?

  8. i'd try importing mpg-2 rather than vobs. use vob2mpg on the vobs to convert before opening them in vegas.
