    I have a nForce 680i SLI motherboard. Model 122-CK-NF68.
The onboard sound system outputs digital sound only. Can I feed this into an inexpensive converter so that it will play with ordinary speakers?

What kind of digital sound output? If it's coaxial (RCA jack, usually orange) or optical (Fiber optic) you would normally feed that to a home theater amplifier. The signal needs to be decoded to the separate channels. I'm not aware of any standalone speakers that would do that. If your PC has separate analog line outs for the different surround channels, you may be able to feed them to a amplified speaker system that has separate speakers for each surround channel.

If you need a fairly inexpensive converter, look for a home theater package system with a amplifier and speakers that has the optical or coaxial inputs for surround sound. Some 'big box' department stores carry them at a fair price.

  3. If your motherboard outputs in digital it must have analog too. It may have to be changed in the controls to default the analog. If for some reason MB does not have analog output the cheapest way to go is adding a sound card, a very good sound card can be purchased around $99 there are much cheaper prices too of course.

That would appear to an Evga motherboard. It supports analog output and optical digital. Neither output can be fed directly to speakers. You need an amplifier to power the speakers.
