Forgive me if I am asking a routine question, I am a noob but learning fast. I did some searching but got lost pretty quick.
I am trying to create a back up copy of a store bought DVD movie that is 7.5 mb. All I want on the back up 4.7 gb DVD-R is the move video/audio only without all the other titles/chapters/etc. When I put the back up copy in my home DVD player, I want the movie to start from the begining and play to the end, that's all. After opening the DVD in Media Converter Ultimate, I found the single VOB file that contains the movie video/audio only from start to finish. I converted this DVD VOB file to a 2.94gb VOB file on my hard drive with no problems, and it plays fine in MPC. When I try to burn this coverted VOB file to DVD, I get an error message that reads:
.vob file is larger than 2gb and cannot be stored in a ISO file system - use UDF file system instead.
I need help from the group to figure out what to do next.
Another related issue: My hard drive light on the front of my PC pulsates constantly just like a heart beat. This pulsating shows up in the form of the video pulsating on a DVD that I just burned. What can I do to stop this?

Use dvd shrink or bd rebuilder and shrink it. You can choose just to keep the main movie.
Or do you just want one file? Then you must burn in udf mode...and it will not work on all dvd players. -
Thank you for your quick reply.
Just curious, why won't a 2.9gb VOB file fit on a 4.7 gb DVD-R ?
Any idea on the pulsating HD light?check out my videos:

find what's accessing your hard drive. the task manager may give you some help. ctrl/alt/del. click on the processes tab and click on cpu twice to bring whatever is using the cpu to the top.

make sure to check the box to show processes from all users. then watch for something moving to the top of the list in time to the h.d. light.
if you still don't see anything try scanning for malware. gmer, superantispyware, malwarebytes are good to start with.--

vobs are normally 1gb in size. there are specs a dvd must comply with in order to play on standalones. if you want just a data file convert the vobs to mpeg-2. vob2mpg is a tool that can do it.
I forgot to mention in my op that I also tried to convert to the DVD vob file to mpeg2 then burn to DVD. The mpeg2 file is the same size at 2.94gb and plays fine in MPC and WMP11 but I get the same error message.check out my videos:

NEW - when I click on the performance tab the green/black grids slowly scroll to the left excatly when the hd light blinks about 1 per second.

You need to start over again and explain what you did CLEARLY. I have no idea what the hell you are talking about.
-
Unless this "movie" is 60 minutes or less in length and there is a heck of a lot of supplemental material, longer than the movie itself, on the original DVD, there is probably a 95% chance that DirtBikeMike does not actually have the complete movie in whatever he is doing to supposedly extract it.
And whatever DirtBikeMike is doing is failing because he is not producing a DVD. Sounds to me like he is basically burning a data disc to get that error message about ISO vs. UDF. -

I use Danisoft Media Converter Ultimate software and load the original store bought DVD into the converter then preview the titles/chapters. There are 2 different titles listed that are 1:40 long, all the rest of the titles/chapters listed are between 2 and 7 minutes max. When previewing the 2 large titles the only difference is one is a wide screen and the other one is a regular screen.
I choose one of the 1:40 titles and convert it to .vob file on my hard drive. When I check the converted vob properties the size is 2.94gb and it plays fine on media player classic. When I try to burn this vob file to DVD I get the error message above. I also tried converting to mpeg2 and got the same 2.9 gb file size that plays fine in MPC and WMP11. I get the same error when trying to burn this file too.
hope this helps, and thx for your timecheck out my videos:

I can't think of ANYONE in this forum that backs up DVDs using your method. Take Baldrick's advice and use DVD Shrink (it's free) to make a DVD-compliant disc of just the main movie of your choice (without extras).
A side note: Prior to isolating the main movie and possibly shrinking its size, you may need to first rip the DVD to hard drive using the free ripping portion of DVDFab HD Decrypter, since DVD Shrink's ripping tool does not handle newer copy protection well.
The reason your current movie plays on your computer but not your stand-alone DVD player is because most PC media players can handle isolated vob files, but DVD units need a DVD-compliant disc structure. For more info, go to the bottom section about DVD file structures here:

WOW...thankx tonz fellas........
I downlaoded shrink and it worked like a champ......much easier and faster than anything I have ever used before.
One more question:
I have some DVD's that I would like to copy and also crop out a portion of the original video. What's the best free software for this?
THX

When you say "crop" do you mean cutting out certain scenes or reframing the image? (The term is generally used for the latter.) If you just want a different freebie tool for editing mpeg2 video, you can always try Mpg2Cut2. However, first try using DVD Shrink in the reauthor mode for editing DVD movies. (There are plenty of tutorials around.)

I did some searching and sounds like virtual dub might be my best bet. I am working with HD .avi files, regular .avi files, mpeg, and store bought dvd movie files.
I also have tonz of Hi8, D8, and VCR tapes from back in the day that I want to capture, edit, and burn to share with family and friends.
I am very glad that I found this site. Keep up the good work.

You are better off just blacking out the outer edges of the video....if that is where your problem areas are.....noise around the edges. There is a great plugin for VirtualDub called Border Control.....it does NOT change the actual size of the video(length and width)....just add a black border.
You WILL need to re-encode the video after you do any editing of this type....just to be warned. You will end up with an enormous, uncompressed AVI file after VDub that is NOT suitable for DVD.
AviDemux(ignore the name) also has a great border tool built in to the program. That program can re-encode your MPEG file to DVD compliant MPEG....just output the file as MPEG-PS. -
DirtBikeMike - Just FYI, the reason the movie was 2.94 GB in size, which as I said is unusually small for a 100 minute movie, is that the DVD contained both the widescreen and full screen versions separately encoded. Most DVDs aren't done that way. Most just give you one or the other. Not really worth the trouble to encode both on the same disc and lessen the quality of both of them to do so. Your additional information made me realize that was what was happening with the DVD.

Great!! Thank you to everyone for their help. I am learning fast. Here's exactly what I am try to do:
1. store bought DVD movies - shrink, clip and burn movie only to 4.7 DVD-R - DONE
2. store bought DVD movies - clip off parts of the start and finish points, remove logo or de-logo text on the image, burn video/audio only to 4.7 DVD-R with the highest possible picture quality that will play on stand alone home players.
3. HD .avi files on my hard drive - clip off parts of the start and finish points, remove logo or de-logo text on the image, burn video/audio only to 4.7 DVD-R with the highest possible picture quality that will play on stand alone home players. Currently when I open one of the HD .avi files in vdub the picture is too big for the screen and the video plays in slow motion. Do I need to rip? the HD avi files to "regular" avi format first? These files play fine in WMP11 and MPC.
4. regular .avi and mpeg files on my hard drive - clip off parts of the start and finish points, burn video/audio only to 4.7 DVD-R with the highest possible picture quality that will play on stand alone home players, and upload to You Tube with the highest possible picture quality.
5. Capture Hi8, D8, and VCR tapes to my hard drive in whatever format is the best for editing then clip off parts of the start and finish points, burn video only to 4.7 DVD-R with the highest possible picture quality that will play on stand alone home players, and upload to You Tube with the highest possible picture quality.
Looking for help and guidance from the group for items 2-5 above. I downloaded the delogo filter file for virtualdub and saved it in the plug ins folder. So now I just nned some expert help and practice
