First lemme explain what im trying to do. I have a bunch of episodic dvd's that i want to rip and store on my computer so i can stream to my ps3. Well i use to use a program called svcd2dvd (for something else completely) so thats how i ran into vob2mpeg. Well i tried playing with the program but couple things i noticed. First it doesn't look like its converting anything as each episode file i end up with is about 900mb big. It seems like all its doing is just renaming the file to mpeg (even though vobs are technically mpegs, i think). Second when i play the file in media player 12 the bar at the bottom just scrolls all the way to the end. The file plays but its almost as if its a bad file. I was wondering if there was an easier program to use I'm not too technically savy when it comes to this stuff i like using maybe one or 2 programs dont know too much about bitrates and all that i just want something thats easy i guess thats why i tried this one. Is there a way to make the files smaller to say 300-400mb. If not is tehre another program you would recommend. Thank you.

VOBs aren't MPG files. The internal format is different. VOB2MPG extracts the video and audio from the VOB and re-packages it into the MPG container. It does not re-encode, so the quality of the source and output is the same. That is the point of VOB2MPG, and why people use it.
If I were doing this (and I have done), I would use VOB2MPG to extract the episodes to my HDD (making sure I had the latest version, as it has had a couple of bug fixes over the past week), then I would use Xvid4PSP to encode to H264/AAC in an MP4 container. Simply compressing a 900 MB Mpeg-2 file down to 300-400MB mpeg-2 is going to give you very poor quality. If the source has 5.1 AC3 audio then you might consider the M2TS container instead, as Xvid4PSP cant do AC3 in an MP4 container yet.Read my blog here.
