Hi guys, i use fraps for creating some ingame footage and i have some problems making a big movie with them.

First of all i did searched the site for tools that can do what i need and failed..

Basically fraps crates HUGE avi files and i want to cut pieces of them, join them together in my chosen order then making the output file size smaller for sharing the video with my friends (and ingame enemys :P).

Lets take an example, i have a 3gb file with 10 minutes video, i tried to encode it using XviD4PSP 5.0 tool (seen it here on this site) and it took a while.. so i thought about cutting out just what i need from it first (i need just first 1:25 minutes from it) and encode after, but i got stuck: i tried using Avidemux - they say it opens many video files and has the option to cut out just what u need but it shows the preview screen all green and couldnt figure out how to fix this..

I crated some ringtunes for an ex using wavepad application (changed mp3 bitrate from 128-312 to 64 thus making the filesize smaller for her phone and sometimes cutting out just parts of mp3) so i`m looking for something simple like that application is (Avidemux looked ok too, but it didnt worked). I said this because some friends told me to use Sony Vegas, Pinnacle Studio, etc and they all too complex for me.. got lost from beginning..

Anyway, if any of you guys have fraps installed (i have 2.9.6) + video editing knowledge + 5 minutes to spare for me pls tell me what application should i use to edit the movie (cut parts + join parts) and some short guide will be appreciated if the application isnt too obvious to use for newbies.

    Hi there.

Over here VirtualDub always works fine for editing Fraps .AVI files.

    I agree with Midzuki.

VirtualDub is the best free, and no-nonsense app, that can do simple cuts and edits with AVI files of many codecs, including FRAPS.

Let me suggest VirtualDub Mod since it has a batch feature if you have lots of cuts. Make sure you select Video -> Direct Stream for speed unless you want to re-encode them to something else. Use the Mark In and Mark Out for your cuts and Append for joining.

If you need particular help with this let us know.

BTW - Although this works with several formats within AVI, I have never worked with FRAPS and I'm not sure if it has keyframes close together, so I'm not sure if it will cut only on keyframes (hence missing by a few here and there).

If you find it's not cutting accurately, then you need to use a later version of VirtualDub which has Smart Render. I can help you with that if you need.

    @ PuzZLeR:

    Fraps is a "nearly-lossless" codec,
and has no P or B frames to get in the way.

P.S.: However only FRAPS itself can encode with its own codec,
which makes me save the edits as lossless MJPG before the final conversion to MPEG-2.

    Thanks for the post.

Well, I figured with such a huge file size, kind of like DV or CineForm, or any lossless AVI, one would figure FRAPS would be similar regarding keyframe structure.

The "BTW" comment was there, just in case - JUST in case - it was like DivX or Xvid with keyframes far apart. Like I said, I personally don't work with FRAPS (or do any gaming) currently so I wanted to be certain.
