I just recently got this program and have tried editing .avi, and directly from DVD's and can not get audio to work. Using .avi it doesn't even show the audio track. When I go directly from a DVD it does import the audio but I still can't haer it. Am I needing some sort of codec?
TIA

The file extension .avi can apply to many video types. DVDs have mpeg2 video and (usually) ac3 audio combined together inside a .vob container. Most editing programs -- like Vegas -- perform best with DV-AVI video with 48k, 16-bit stereo wav audio. (The audio wav can either be separate or incorporated into the DV-AVI file.) There are many other avi types, such as divx / xvid, which are highly compressed playback formats that cannot be edited in programs like Vegas. To understand the video codec of your avi, go to the Tools section of this site and download the free utility called GSpot. Open your video file with that and it will give you the information about your video and audio types, and whether or not you have the appropriate codec loaded on your system.
Your version of Vegas may not be able to handle ac3 audio. In that case, it would need to be converted to a wav file.
I am also curious how you got an avi out of a DVD, since a correct DVD structure contains vob files, not avi files. -
Thanx for your quick response. I definitely will check out the GSpot prgm.
I probably didn't make myself very clear about the .avi. What I was saying is that I tried working with .avi files as well as DVD files and in both instances I was not able to work with the audio portions when editing.
Thanx again! -
I tried the GSpot prgm. and it says that I have the right codecs for the .avi file and the .vob files also. When I imported the .vob files into Vegas, I did see that the audio portion was there whereas the .avi files weren't. I still can not work with the .vob files though even though they are present.

If NE1 Can offer more, . . . I still have not been able to resolve this issue.

What did GSpot say about the avi codec? Is it DV avi, divx avi, xvid avi -- what? (You never said, so how can we begin to help you?) As I tried to explain in an earlier post, avi is just a container, and I seriously doubt your avi is actlually DV-AVI, or else it would work fine in Vegas. Even if you have the proper codec on your computer, it does not mean Vegas is going to handle it. The audio stream inside a vob is likely ac3 (although sometimes it is a PCM wav that is already compatible with Vegas), and it may need to be converted to a 48kHz, 16-bit, stereo wav file before it can be imported into Vegas. But I have said this before, and it did not seem to sink in with you.
Can you post screenshots of your GSpot info on the avi and vob files? That would give us the needed info for solving your problem. -
Hi,
I have Vegas Movie Studio 9.0 and I have what appears to be the same problem you are having. When I burn a DVD I am not getting any audio. Yesterday I submitted the following to Sony support:
"Several days ago I bought the retail version of Vegas Movie Studio 9.0 at Best Buy. It includes the DVD Architect Studio 4.5. I am unable to burn a DVD with audio. In the prepared folder, the AUDIO_TS folder is empty. The burned DVD video is fine. I've used several .AVI files including a movie captured via Vegas MS and firewire from my Sony DCR-PC120. What a nightmare this has been. I sure hope there is a simple solution to this. Also I have Sony Forge Audio Studio 9.0c and it is configured as the default audio editor. "
If anyone has a solution to this problem I'd sure appreciate some help. Thanks.

Make sure "include audio" is checked under encoder settings. You can encode with audio inside the DVD mpg or you can encode with separate audio and video files. In the latter case you need to include both video and audio assets in your DVD Architect project. Explain your encoder settings. Explain your DVD Architect project assets.

Hi edDV,
Didn't know that about AUDIO_TS. Thanks. I did a recapture from the camcorder and I have both audio and video on the Vegas MS timeline.
With respect to the encoder settings, where do I find them?
I am leaving the computer until later or early morny and I'll check back as soon as I can.
Thanks very much for your response.

I have Vegas Pro not Vegas Premium.
My settings are in "Render As", then MPeg2 (DVD Architect) template, then custom settings.Recommends: Kiva.org - Loans that change lives.

Hi,
The plot thickens.... I uninstalled Vegas Movie Studio, downloaded and installed a trial version of Adobe Premier Elements v7. I burned a DVD and had the same problem I had with Vegas. No audio on the DVD. I'm going to do some more testing with some different capture files and see what happens.

Hi,
I figured it out. I can now burn DVDs with audio just fine using Vegas Movie Studio. Sweeeeet! The problem was mine and mine alone. I had my DVD player misconfigured. It had nothing to do with the computer or related software. Actually I think this is one of the dumest mistakes I've ever made. Anyway, edDV, thanks for your help. In the process I learned a few things about my system and myself.

nah it ain't dumb. It is actually a symptom of intelligence. people who know their **** tend to look at every problem as a complex one, without going back to basics and thinking it can be a very simple issue.
That is what happens to me sometimes anyway
