i didnt compress the audio. i prolly should tho. i'll try and use mpeg layer-3. unless you know of a better one

i just tried to go into audio compression and virtualdub crashed. it did this before it let me choose a compression. it said this as the cause:
An out-of-bounds memory access (access violation) occurred in module 'lameACM'...
...reading address F7F0FFFF...
...while enumerating formats for audio codec "LAME MP3 Codec v0.9.0 - 3.93 (stable)" (acompchoose.cpp:222)...
...while enumerating audio codec ID 0021be80 (acompchoose.cpp:217).
anyone have any ideas? thanks -
in virtualdub under options, check both sync to audio and drop frames when behind.
audio-set to full processing mode-do not compress but do set the sampling rate under conversion. capture something of sufficient length to see if your sync problem is gone. -
i tried doing that but the audio and video are still out of sync. everything that you asked me to set was done before i could go into capture mode. because i dont get those options when i go into capture avi. so i dont know if they would make a difference. i'll post some pics of the options that are available after i go into capture mode. thanks for your advice. if you have any other ideas please let me know

If you are previewing during the capture, try turning that off. May be too much CPU load to display and cap at the same time. VD has always been problematic for me for capturing. It seems to take some 'fine tuning' to get it set up properly. Using HuffyUV and maybe another format than MP3 for the audio may also help. I don't have VD on this computer, so no specific advice.
But I would open Task Manager and check your CPU usage during capture.
About all I can advise is to try some different formats and settings and once you get the sync problem solved, work your way up to the higher compression formats. -
For capturing i used virtualvcr, less buggy than virtualdub.Use uncompressed wav for audio which is much easier on the system.
I think,therefore i am a hamster. -
Turn off 'Enable audio playback' = No more V-dub sync problems

mgh thanks for the advice but the problem was still there. i appreciate your help though!
GideonK thanks for the advice. it worked! only drawback is that i cant listen to it while its recording. but it records with no problems. thanks again
thank you to everyone who replied! -
Well, after a year trying to get A & V in sync w/ VDub I'm switching to Debut by NCHSoftware
http://www.nchsoftware.com/capture/index.html
Real Producer & WinMovieMaker have no problems with AV sync (but they don't do AVIs). So, downloaded Debut - works perfectly. Can do screen captures as well.
Oh, Debute is free.

To fix the audio sync problem when enabling audio playback, click capture->timing.. uncheck "force audio clock when audio playback is enabled". click ok, and disable and enable audio->enable audio playback.
-
Well, after using Debut for a while it too has it's issues.
Aren't there any other robust capture programs similar to VirtualDub/Debut? We have an Osprey capture card and mainly use it to record video from the s-video input.
Thanks -GA -
The end user of the AV files are on Macs, and are having problem with the audio from the Debut Xvid/MP3 files I give them. I've tried to get AC3 audio working with Debut and Vdub, but not successful.
Debut gives no error (but no audio either). At least Vdub gives the following: "Error initializing audio stream compression: Check that the sampling rate and number of channels in the source is compatible with the selected compressed audio format".
How does one get AC-3 audio to work with a capture program? BTW, I've installed K-lite Mega codec pack.
Thanks! -
geneaum, to capture with Vdub and using AC-3 audio codec you need to download the AC3ACM.ZIP file at
Extract the files to a folder and than right-click on the ac3acm.inf file and click install
In Vdub, click on Audio and than compression and chose the AC3 codec. Captured file will have the AC3 audio.
(You may want to remove the K-lite and only install the codecs you need).
As far as the audio sync problem, use the Huffy lossless video codec: never sync problems, requires large disk space, used for high quality captures.
For lower quality captures, I use Divx. lots of sync issues if you stay with default settings. I changed the speed/quality settings and I have no sync issues.
