I'd like to know, from actual users, what would be the most rugged camcorder models to take out into a hot, dusty southwest American desert. I don't need a lot of bells and whistles, just 3 chips for clean, SD video in a mini-DV format for about $1,000 (or less).

Anybody out there would like to tell me what they've successfully used?

Probably a used broadcast Panasonic DVCPro. Those are rugged but also expensive to repair. Consumer models aren't sealed unless you put them into a diving case. But that is an option.

I live in the "hot, dusty, southwest" of the USA..
    You do not want mini-dv...
If your really concerned about it try the underwater version of Sanyo...........
I personally use the SD card type cam.s............
Mini-dv's are fine but 1 hot, dusty day outside and you will be spending a lot of time cleaning..
    Lots-o-grit on the head's..............
    Been there, done that.............
