FireWire from a DV camera, HD or not, will still copy in real time. 1 hour of video takes 1 hour to transfer. If you are asking about a hard drive camcorder, they use other formats than DV most times. Usually MP4 or MPG. They may transfer faster, at a lower quality, but not through FireWire, AFAIK. Very high end cameras may use different transfer methods and DV or better, but big $$$.

DV tape camcorders still seem to be the best value for the money. HD (High Definition) camcorders are also now common, so you have that option also. If your final output is DVD with good quality, I would consider a regular DV tape camcorder.

The other common options are a MPEG camcorder, some burning to a mini-DVD disc, and others to a hard drive (HDD). More common for hard drive camcorders is using a MP4 format. Most times a DV tape camcorder is better quality. A mini-DVD camcorder does has the advantage of DVD ready MPEG files, but is not as good for editing as DV and is lesser quality than DV. MP4 is not good for editing.
