FOr example the player can only play DIVX files up to 720x480 does this apply to WMV format to?

My 5992 plays wmv at 720x480/29.97 and 720x576/25. That is about the limit.

Hi-definition WMV test movies are freely available from MicroSoft:

Why not burn one and find out for yourself?

The 5990/5992 definitely imposes the same resolution limits on WMV as it does with AVI. I'd assume the same would hold true for MP4s.

I am going to say yes the limit is the same. However if HDMI is not the output the play will say output resolution too high as the YbbpRb is limited to 720p but the player in paticular will only do 480p on that cable. Hook up the HDMI to be sure
if all else fails read the manual

It will say "Video resolution not supported". I haven't had anything over 720x576 play. 960x540p won't play although 720x540p will. If you have a 720p file that plays post a sample here.

The resolution issue has nothing to do with connections. The limit is in the decoding chipset.

the manual 480/576p is the max resoultion supported. so we will stick with that. some 480p clips on mirco$ofts webiste wont play because they are above the main profile. so be sure u use a main profile clip to test with

sorry bout the confusion. Xvid gives a diffrent error for me than your wmv error is all
if all else fails read the manual
