Ok my 360 has had near meltdowns the last day or so. It is really really hot.

What would you recommend for a smallish yet powerful external fan for the 360? I am not talking about the type that hook on the back. I'm talking about any type of standup self powered fans for use to ventilate the smoking hot 360.

Also I have a seperate question:

Is it possible or recommended to replace the powersupply yourself? Would this void the warranty (I bought it used but ended up buying a seperate warranty after it died this past summer and they fixed it).

@bodyslide - do you mean a small desktop fan?

I was considering that type of a fan. Do you point it directly at the back? Is your xbox in a shelf or sitting out in the open? Mine is in a shelf and I think that might be contributing to the heat issue. I'm just not sure how I'll move it because it works so nice in its current location.

EDIT - the shelf is an open air shelf. It has front and top ventalation and no doors in front of it. However it has a solid wood back so no extra air flow behind it.

Yes, It's normally in my Son's room, It's a cheap fan we got from Wally World for about 10 bucks. His unit is in the open beside his TV and everytime he plays the Xbox, the fan is on medium blowing on the back portion of the system.

  5. If money is not a problem, and you want to really go all-out, you could get the Lian Li XB01.

@joe the dude - thanks I'll think I'll pass on that.

@bodyslide - ok sounds like a plan. I'll have to get around to doing that.

That Lian Li is sweet, but $120 is a lot...
Then again -- it's only the cost of 2 games!

Thats interesting. I always thought that was just part of the power cord system. I didn't know that was the actual power supply. So that is in efffect the internal guts sans the fan that a pc would have where you plug stuff into?

Now I have mine behind some books on a seperate shelf. There is about a couple inches space between it and the books and nothing on top of it. Does this need more space?

I actually haven't had any flare ups recently so that is good news.

Yep the big grey thing is your power supply the only thing in the case is a mobo, fan, and dvd-rom drive you might want to give the power supply some more room.

In most of the Red ring of death issues from my understanding is caused because they were in a rush to crank out units and they used a oven to bake the chips in instead of soldering by hand and they had some cold joints
(not ususally from a power supply overheating)

Since they still fix those xboxes made after 2006 id send it in if you were having problems and just get a repair done

It took them 8 days to do mine
