Akai parts from the manufacturer: http://www.akaiusa.com/ You could also contact Akai and see if there is a recommended parts dealer nearby.

Other than that, try a internet search for ' akai parts '.

Either way, this may take a while.

thanks Red. Yeah, I found that site shortly after posting here, but forgot to come back and update this. I called and their msg says to email instead of leaving a msg because email is their preferred method of comm. Anyway, that was on a Saturday, so we'll see if tomorrow produces anything from them. I'm going to keep calling them anyway because I really need to be able to fix this thing in the very short time I'll be at my Mom's next weekend.

Any other info will of course be appreciated. I'll try every place I can think find in her area - electronics repair/auto shops/radio shacks/ maybe even a dentist to get those little braces rubberbands to see if they will work. I haven't seen the unit I am going to work on yet, so I cannot assess from afar accurately.

    Thanks again,
    Chuck

I have never seen a DVD or CD player that employed a belt for any of its critical parts. In all cases the disc motor directly drives that miniature platter the disc is clamped on. The carriage the laser is riding on is driven either by a screw-like bar driven by another motor, or a gear driving a rail that the carriage sits on. There is a belt, but this is for driving the mechanism that opens and closes the disc tray. This belt is never critical and indeed any good ole rubber band of similar (or slightly smaller diameter) will do.
The drive belts for the cassette mechanism are another matter (that's a combo, right?).
For the nth time, with the possible exception of certain Intel processors, I don't have/ever owned anything whose name starts with "i".

Thanks Turk, like I said "I haven't seen the unit I am going to work on yet, so I cannot assess from afar accurately." I really won't know for sure exactly what I really need to replace until I am holding it in my hands. My Mom has done her best to try to describe to me what is and is not working, but regardless it will be most convenient to have it in my grimies and fix it right then. nonetheless, I DO appreciate all the shots in the dark we can take here. I DID have her describe the unit's size to me, and to my surprise (I've never worked on one of these tv/dvd combos before) she said the DVD drive is the same size (she gave me dimensions) as a normal 5.25" bay drive in any PC.

A kid from the radio shack where she bought this from two years ago tried to fix it him self but couldn't and gave it back to her in two seperate units - obviously. That is how she could give me dimensions of the drive itself.

hey, everything's a work in progress.. ha!
