I believe you can have only one audio track in an mpeg programme stream. You would have to re-encode the video to have fixed subtitles if you want mpeg. How much of a quality hit you take depends on a number of factors, but if the bitrate is low, you will notice it.

I don't know any all-in-one solution for this....maybe the old dvdx or dvd2svcd. Or else must you extract the subtitles from the dvd using for example vsrip and then convert to mpeg using xvid4psp or avidemux (they can make burned in subs).

Or It would be much easier to convert to avi xvid/divx using for example autogk, fairuse wizard. And you can have two audio tracks.

There are a number of all-in-one solutions, but none are free. And the results are decent but I have problems with all of the ones that I have tried.

Wondershare DVD Ripper Platinum is one of them. The bitrate settings for NTSC MPEG2 outputs are a bit lacking (I was only looking at 4000 kbps or higher where they give you choices of 4000, 8000, 9800 kbps). I would like something that would allow me to use the same bitrate as the source. Also, it always outputs the files as 4:3 rather than matching the aspect ratio. Quality of the output video is decent, but is not as good as I have seen with some of the other solutions that require you to extract subtitles (DVD2SVCD, XVID4PSP, etc).

Alldj DVD Ripper Platinum is another. It allows you to actually input the bitrate you want to use...but for some reason will NOT encode if the MPEG2 bitrate is set higher than 5500 kbps. On top of that, I never actually got the bitrate that I asked for (using Gspot on the file after encoding). It does, however, allow you to specify what aspect ratio to use.

The platinum version of both of these programs actually allow you to encode into something BESIDES MPEG2, so if MPEG2 is the only thing you need to output to, you could use the basic version of the software.

Winnydows (XVID4PSP) has made a comment on his forum that he is looking into adding the ability to pull subtitles directly from the VOBs, but there isn't a version available that does this yet.
