I've seen mentioned here replacing the burner in this machine. Can anyone let me know what make/model you used for replacement? I can't seem to find one that will fit. Other burners 'work' but I can't close up the machine.

    Thanks in advance

See http://club.cdfreaks.com/f102/shw-160p6s-lvw-5005-success-165085/ to see how it's done in LiteOn recorders including helpful photos. I'd think it should be similar for Daytek recorders. Also see http://club.cdfreaks.com/f102/replacement-drives-liteon-5xxx-recorders-207698/ for a list of replacement burners that work. Note some of the newer LiteOn models listed freeze on fast forward, and only the 1693 and older models record VCD which is the only recording function lacking in the newer models.

But the drive in the 950s is not the typical square/rectangle like a normal DVD burner. Seeing the photos makes me wonder why this PVR isn't like 'everything' else out there that uses typical drives. That would make things a lot easier.

I've found that the same drives as used with the Liteon replacements will work with the Dayteks. The newer 22X drives don't work sadly. 18X and down seem to work fine. You won't be able to find the exact replacement drives though. I never could. I have 2 Dayteks that I use as my workhorse recorders now. Did you try to pull the HDDs out and replace them as the recorder will automatically format them for use? I never tried with a drive past 250 Gig but if the Liteons can take as much as a 400 Gig, then I'm assuming the Daytek's will as well. They are actually quite versatile little recorders once you modify them...

Can you let me know which brand and model of burner you used? Was it in a 950s?

I suggest you read the last 2 pages from the second link in my Jan 10 post. Many of the older burners in the list on page #1 of that thread are good choices but difficult if not impossible to find. Your best option is probably the Sony DRU-190A or LiteOn SHM-165H6S cross flashed to Sony DRU-120C from post #261 of that thread which has links to purchase that LiteOn drive. Note many of the newer LiteOn models will freeze on fast forward whereas the Sony rebadged LiteOns have normal fast forward function if that's important. About 2 years ago I cross flashed a LiteOn SHM-165P6S to Sony DRU-120C as burner replacement for my LiteOn LVW-5005, and it's still working great.

That's a lot of good information, but what everyone here is missing is that these burners will not fit in the 950s. It is not the regular rectangle box shape/size burner. I have swapped the burner for an LG I had laying around and it worked just fine, but will not line up with the eject slot on the 950s.

I would post a photo, but that means digging through the mess that is my AV set-up (again). Ugh!

I'm unfamiliar with the Daytek 950 and don't know if it could be fitted to work internally. However, I've read some posts in the CDFreaks LiteOn Recorder forum where some have connected replacement burners externally using a long IDE cable by cutting a slot in the rear of the recorder case. You might search that forum to get more specifics if you'd like to give that a try.
