  1. I have downloaded some .asf stream files (.wmv) with GetASFStream program. How can i make them work on my stand-alone DVD-player?

  2. Not many players support the WMV/ASF format, you may have to convert the files to either DVD or XviD (if your player supports it).

Plenty of programs and guides on this site to help you do that...

Well, i have first converted those files to AVI using ASFTools. Then opened with VirtualdubMod. But converting to Xvid doesn't seem to work. Video is all messed up (purple green mess) when converting. Also the file size is going to be very very big, compared to the original file size.

I don't recommend either of the programs you tried. If you buy the commercial Divx codec, you can use it with Dr. Divx. If you don't buy the codec, Dr. Divx limits the quality of your encodes but it will still work. AutoGK can probably do it too and it can use the free Xvid codec.

The size you get when encoding depends on the bit rate you use and it shouldn't necessarily be much bigger than the original file. In my experience WMV and Divx/Xvid compress about the same.
