Currently using TMPGEnc DVD Author 3 and Super to covert my AVI files to VOB DVD files and then importing them over to Win AVI to create a menu and put them all into a DVD folder to burn onto DVD with Nero 8. Sorry I know that's a long one.

The only problem is that some of the DVD's, maybe even all of them, freeze at some points when playing them on a standalone DVD player. The typical burning speed is 6x or 8x and I'm using 16x Memorex 4.7GB DVD+R.

Is there a better way to covert my AVI's from beginning to end that will stop the freezing? The VOB file seem to play perfectly on my computer before burning onto DVD so I'm assuming it's not the DVD authoring programs.

    Any ideas or suggestions?

I would recommend a different MPEG encoder program and a different burning program. WinAVI, SUPER and Nero aren't a great combination. Though TMPEGEnc Author is solid. Both SUPER and WinAVI have problems at times. And Nero likes to re-encode everything it sees, causing more quality loss.

HC encoder or Quenc are two good freeware encoders, and I would only use ImgBurn to burn to DVD. If you still have a failure, then try a different DVD brand. Verbatim is usually a good brand. Memorex can be problematic at times.

Thanks for that info. I will get those and try them right away. Any speeds to burn at recommended?

Would you consider those the best programs out to do what I'm trying to do? Basically it's converting AVI to DVD files with menu creation. The menu is very basic though. Just links to the different episodes.

If you just want simple, try FAVC (uses HCEnc and creates very simple text menus) or DVD Flick (uses ffmpeg and creates slightly more complex menus). Both are free, and both produce results ready to burn with Imgburn.

If you're comfortable using TMPGEnc for the authoring, those programs should give you good quality, depending on your source quality. If you wanted very basic menus, FAVC, DVD Flick and some of the other all-in-one converters might be easier.

For burning speed, I just drop down one speed from the rated speed and haven't had any problems. I burn 16X at 12X. But I use Taiyo Yuden most times. It's only available online. Verbatim should be locally available at Best Buy, Staples and other office type stores.

    I see guns1inger was faster.

Awesome! I'll try DVD Flick with ImgBurn then. Hopefully that will get rid of the freezing. Strange though, as it only happens after it's burned onto the DVD and not while playing on the computer from the file.

Which seems to indicate a burning or media quality issue

Just a question, I downloaded both, using DVD Flick now. It doesn't let you create your own menu like TMPGEnc does it? Should I just stick with TMPGenc? It doesn't covert to ISO though.

First things first. We are mixing issues here. The most likely cause of your problem is bad media. Memorex is a poor choice. Try Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden. You have received some good advice about the software you use to create DVDs but I suspect your primary problem is bad media.

  10. All the suggestions offered in this thread are good ones

I use a rather inexpensive program ( Photostory DVD (Magix)) to create a movie file ( mpeg2) with using

    pictures or video clips.

I use Nero to author but I don't use it to burn

There is no better program than Imageburn for burning a DVD or DLDVD

With DVD blank media brand name is important

No matter how cheap they maybe don't buy any DVD blanks other than Verbatim + or

Tayo Udan. You can write on TU

If you read in many forums here you will find uniformly everyone recommends

only those two brands and Imageburn for burning

Don't use any labels on the DVD . They may peel off or affect the spin speed

Also it is important to have a good DVD player that is not fussy about the blank

I have tried three different free standing DVD players

I like the new Philips DVP 5990

Please get a HDMI cable if your TV is capable of HDMI connection

Do not use only one program to encode, author and burn. By doing so you can end up with a coaster

    Good luck

Awesome, this is great info. I'll switch batches right after I'm done with this spool. Too bad I bought the 100 pack but I'm halfway through it already so it won't be long.

Also since you guys recommend Verbatim or TU for DVDs, would you say that's also a great brand for burning data DVDs? Need to backup my HD and want the least amount of corruption if possible.
