  1. Got a new computer with Vista (no choice) and find that my usual reliable programs are not responding. I've always used WinAvi and Nero to burn. When I use WinAvi I can get it to work once then the program will not open again (Ver8.0). Nero (Ver9) is acting the same way. I've even moved both programs to XP compatibility and find that I can watch the burned DVD on the computer but not my standalone player. (Never had a problem before, same disc, etc.) I then tried ConvertXtoDVD using the built in burner, same result,

Am I missing a codec? I know Vista is taking its lumps but I'm stuck with it and am very frustrated. Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Jeff

When you loaded those programs, did you use 'Run as administrator'? Most all those programs should run without problems. The older versions of Nero won't but V8 and above should work fine.

If you just want to burn DVDs and other files, try the freeware ImgBurn. If you need a player, try VLC. It uses it's own codecs, so nothing more to install.

There are few programs, except some older ones, that have much of any problems with Vista. If the computer came installed with Vista, it definitely should be compatible.

Do you have some sort of anti-virus or other program installed that may be blocking your programs? This all sounds like more than just a Vista problem.

BTW, what version of Vista? Home or Home Premium. HP should have MPEG-2 codecs already installed.

XP compatibility mode is not needed for Nero V8 and 9.
