I was shopping for a DVD player for a neighbor and found this new model at Costco for only $49.99.

The box says "Windows Media Video playback for movies from your PC".

    The manual note says

"This unit can only support WMV 9 Main Profile (Low Level) with file extension 'wmv'.
It does not support playback of Advanced Profile and DRM-protected media files."

Anyone know more about this? I have the unit to test until Monday. Low Level implies 320x240. Does anyone have test suggestions or test files for this unit?

I can't find DVP5992 wmv details on the Philips site. The web copy is identical to the 5990.

I'm just looking for the best way to find wmv limits. It plays MPeg2 fine and is Divx Ultra Certified. It even plays audio (not video) from DV files.

But WMV support at this price level is new to me.

Also, it loads flash drives and hard disks faster than I've seen from DVD players.

    Important update:

WMV files saved from WMM as "Best Quality for playback on my computer" play fine on the 5992.

    WMV (VC-1 Simple/Main) profile
    720x480
    3677 Kb/s

    WMA 192 Kb/s stereo.

They do show typical 29.97p jerkiness. It isn't playing 59.94p.

This does indicate the 5992 is reaching beyond VC-1 Main/Low into Main/Medium profile and doing OK so far.
