Had an iidea yesterday to improve the quality of my SVCD and DVD encodes (I do filtering in Vdub and frameserve to TMPGEnc). I triedit, and I think it helps, but regardless it seemed a good enough idea to share.

Note: I use PAL....all you NTSC people probaly have far greater issues to deal with than simple interlacing)

I theorised that any filtering in VDUB will tend to cause field to field 'cross talk' if dealt with as a frame, so what I did was:

    1. Use deinterlace filter: 'unfold fields side by side'
    2. do all my filtering (each field is then treated independently)
    3. Apply deinterlacing filter again: 'Fold side by side fields together'
    4. Frameserve to TMPGEnc

I would be interested to hear any opinions (especially anyone who has a good reason why this is a BAD idea!!!)

Otherwise, I hope it helps someone.

  2. This is absolutely necessary when doing any filtering, resizing, basically any area-based modifications to the video.
If done otherwise, the field to
    field crosstalk screws everything up.

I've always wondered why this isn't really documented anywhere. I think it's probably because most people are creating VCDs, which are single-field only, and the unfolding is therefore not necessary.

    Glad you agree LavaJockey,

I thought it seemed a good idea, and was also surprised I hadn't read it somewhere already.
