  1. Hi I have a vcr to dvd recorder. I am tryingto record some of my old vcr movies onto dvd, but it keeps telling me this program cannot be recorded. Does this mean the movie is copyrighted? This sucks because I own the movies. I just want to put them on to dvd so that they keep the quality that they are origgianally at. Is there anyway around this? Thanks

Most commercial VHS movies are copy protected. Usually the instructions supplied with a DVD recorder specifically say that it isn't possible to record those.

There are devices available that filter out copy protection when placed between the line-out on a VCR and the line-in DVD recorder, but you can't use them with a combo deck. See this thread: https://forum.videohelp.com/topic357786.html#1896124

My relative fell into the same boat with a convenient-looking combo unit. Unfortunatley, the manual was inside the box that states you can't transfer the protected VHS to DVD. If this is the case, you'd be best off selling the unit and buying 2 separate units...actually three...the TBC or somesuch in between them...to remove the MV protection

If it's all too much, you can always drop them off to a hobbiest with the right setup. I doubt if a lab will transfer them for you because the copyright laws still apply.

  4. If this is true what good are these units? The whole purpose is so you can back up a vcr collection to dvd.

I don't do much VCR to DVD conversions however, I use the older Hauppauge 150 PVR capture card for those rare vcr transfers..It ignores most MV that I've thrown at it.. By far not the best quality but it works...

A lot of people have home movies recorded on regular VHS cassettes. My sister's family has a ton of these from when their grown sons were babies, on up until a couple of years ago. Also, they'd work for archived TV shows.

Just to play both and transfer home recordings evidently
This is why reading up on this stuff beforehand saves you hundreds of dollars and countless hours of frustration

I've tranferred over 250 VCR movies tapes to DVD. You need a "stabilizer to defeat the macrovision copy protection.
Go to: http://www.checkhere22.com/stabilizer/ This should solve your problem inexpensivelt.
