Yes I admit I saw it yesterday.

It wasn't bad at all. Strange seeing a WB logo instead of the traditional FOX logo. No Fox fanfare either. They also didn't do a text crawl. It kinda took away some of the magic but not that much.

I won't divulge much of the plot only to say of course that it was set between Episode 2 and 3 since it involves the clone wars.

Will the animated series be cg or handdrawn? If its cg and any where near this quality I will definitely be recroding it. Will it be on that CW network since its a WB production?

Took my 9 year old to see it this morning. He loved it, I wasn't so impressed with it. It certainly signals a change in style and direction for the new TV series. The humor and tone is more in line with Phantom menace/Attack of the Clones (i.e. juvenile - expect lots of dumb droid jokes). The visual style is curious. The characters look like the have been cut from foam blocks and painted by hand, yet some of the close ups had finger prints embedded in the textures. Sometimes is works quite well, sometimes it was too distracting. It is aimed at a young audience, and probably meets that target well.

Ultimately, to me it felt like a pilot for a TV series, and should have gone direct to video. I would have felt like I was getting value for money buying a DVD. Paying to see it at the cinema's felt like a rip off. George Lucas isn't quite shaking the loose change out of Star Wars fans pockets, but if he has any sense this will be the last go round. So far he is batting 2 out 7 for my money.

The new series will be CGI and use the same style, which is very closely aligned to the more traditionally animated Clone Wars series already available.

Having now had 24 hours to think about it, I am even less favorably disposed towards this film. It is direct to video fodder. It is everything you hated about episodes one - three (and probably 6) - bad acting, bad script, bad story - with none of the good points.

If you have the full power of ILM at your disposal - the same people that created the amazing opening crash sequence to Revenge of the Sith - why would you produce something that looks like it was produced by a year 8 class using cinema 4D in their spare time ?

Not only have they not used the original voices in most cases, but the voice "talent" they have used has been doped up on ketamine for a week before going into the studio. Imaging the worst over-dub you have ever heard on the lowest budget anime, then image the actors that failed the audition for that gig. These are the people they employed to do Clone Wars.

George Lucas isn't shaking the loose change from the pockets of fans, he is shaking it from the corpse of the Star Wars franchise. This is nothing but a cynical, franchise extending, money-grubbing flogging of a dead horse.

If you are 7 - 9 years old then you don't care and will love it. If you grew up with the originals, you have a right to feel ripped off paying full price.

@ guns1inger - I think thats a bit harsh for this. I for one went in knowing it was geared to kids so I wasn't expecting a masterpiece. I enjoyed it but not at the same level of the prequels.

I liked the prequels for the most part. As such I am not as predisposed to dislike things related to the prequels.

I do think the stroy was a bit thin and probably would have been better ats a video relase. However as far as full price my theater has 5.00 tickets for everything but primetime showings. I didn't waste too much money on it considering it wasn't much more than a rental of a dvd.

edit - Yes I do love the original trilogy and will always consider it the best of all things Star Wars. However I don't see what everyone who hates the prequels is complaining about.

To me anything that keeps Star Wars alive is worthwhile. Except for the bashing comedy bits..... I deplore Space Balls and related materials.... But that said I veiw all six live action movies in this order:

    A New Hope (#1)
    Empire (#2)
    Jedi (#3)
    Sith (#4)
Clones (#5) - edges out phantom menace for jango fett fights and of course the yoda duel with dooku
Menace (#6) - all though I do like the prequels this was a little hard because Lucas was out of the Star Wars universe for so long. Clones and Sith gelled more becasuse he got back in it and the cast got more involved with thier characters as the story progressed).

I'd rank Clone Wars at the bottom obviously becuase it is a kids movie. However I wouldn't say it was substantially worse than the real movies just different.

I think it is all about perception and what you want out of a movie. I don't want Star Wars to be over with. I look forward to the live action tv series whenever that finally is produced.

DeXeSs, they are releasing a new tv series done in this style of animation. The film is an introduction to this series.

I hope its not animated like what i've been seeing over store tvs lately. Mostly trailers. I thought they were going regular. It would be a shame they went that way just to go all out on special effects that they can't do with humans. Anyway. I was not looking forward to any SW tv series. Let it rest. Let it rest, and go down in the anals of time. Gosh!

...and Yoda313...Empire is definitely better than New Hope

You might be confusing things a little. This isn't the live action series yet. That is still under pre-production or at least the script writing stage. No release information for that yet.

The CLONE WARS movie is CGI. That will be what the new tv series will be - cgi.

The live action tv show isn't ready yet.

Regardless of what anyone says I did watch it (this evening as a matter of fact - dvr'd it ). It was pretty good. I like the quality of the cgi. It is more or less on par with the Clone Wars movie which I thought was good.

Now if only Comcast would get the Cartoon Network in HIGH DEF..........

Is it only 3 episodes? Or is it going to be shown later in the year? I saw the commercial pushing the website and it said something about 3 episode special?

If you think of it as a giant video game cutscene epic instead of a bonafide tv show than you have the right perspective.

For me its just fun that StarWars isn't dead yet. Look its more than 30 years old and there is still some demand for it. How many series can say that? Granted it didnt' have the same volume as Star Trek but even Star Trek imploded thanks to ENTERPRISE.
