Whenever I try to shut down AOL (I'm on AOL 9.1), I get a popup that says 'An AOL Software update is now available. Would you like to install now?' I click on 'Install now', it finishes shutting it down and brings up a small window that says 'Initializing'. About 45 seconds later I get another popup that says 'One or more AOL files are still in use and preventing this update from taking place. To continue, please close all open applications, then select Retry'. The only thing running in the Taskmgr window is 'AOL' which I presume is the install. I do have Norton Antivirus running, but I don't know how to shut that down. Could that be the problem?

  2. Sorry, I thought AOL switched from being an ISP to an Ad company. Thought Earthlink was buying it all

But seriously, folks...can anyone help me?

It's not exactly killing me. I just have to hit 'Install later' each time I shut down AOL, but it's annoying. I googled the messages and couldn't find anything.

If I have to reinstall AOL, the last install disk I have is 9.0. I can't find the disks in stores anymore. You used to be able to find them in freebie racks everywhere; grocery stores, Walgreens, etc.

  4. Isn't an option for it to check for updates right before you go offline?
I would check the preferences and tell it to stop checking for updates

If anyone's interested, I fixed it!

Disable (un-check) 'Fast Start' in 'AOL Start-up settings'.
